Ian Moran (born August 24, 1972 in Cleveland , Ohio ) is a retired American ice hockey player . The defender played in his professional career, which lasted from 1993 to 2007, over 550 games in the National Hockey League for the Pittsburgh Penguins , Boston Bruins and Anaheim Ducks . With the national team of the USA he took part in the Junior World Championship in 1991 and the A-World Championship in 1993 .

Career

Ian Moran was born in Cleveland and played at Belmont Hill High School in Belmont , a suburb of Boston , in his youth . In the 1990 NHL Entry Draft , he was selected in 107th position by the Pittsburgh Penguins , before he represented his home country at the 1991 Junior World Championship for the first time on an international level and finished fourth with Team USA . In the fall of 1991, Moran moved to Boston College for two years . With his ice hockey team, the Boston College Eagles , the defender took part in the game operations of Hockey East and was named Rookie of the Year and voted into the All-Rookie Team in his first year . After he had reached sixth place in the A-World Championship in 1993 , Moran decided in the summer of 1993 to change to the organization of the Pittsburgh Penguins.

They temporarily use him with their farm team , the Cleveland Lumberjacks , in the International Hockey League (IHL), so that Moran returned to his hometown. He also spent larger parts of the 1993/94 season with the US national team, for which he played 50 games. Moran made his debut for the Penguins in the National Hockey League as part of the Stanley Cup playoffs in 1995 , in which he came on eight missions. In the further course, the defender established himself in the NHL line-up of the Penguins and was there regularly on the ice until Pittsburgh gave him in March 2003 to the Boston Bruins and in return received a four-round vote for the NHL Entry Draft 2003 .

In Boston, however, Moran received less and less working time - partly due to recurring injuries. The US-American spent the lockout of the 2004/05 season at Bofors IK in the second-rate Swedish Allsvenskan and at the Nottingham Panthers in the British Elite Ice Hockey League . After only 12 NHL appearances in the 2005/06 season, he joined the Anaheim Ducks as a free agent , which, however, also - apart from one mission - turned off in the AHL with the Portland Pirates . After Moran was briefly active for the Eisbären Berlin from January 2007 , he signed a new contract with the New Jersey Devils in July 2007 . After 12 more AHL appearances in Lowell , he finally ended his active career.

After the end of his career, Moran worked as a journalist, in the financial sector, as an ice hockey coach in the youth sector and for The Hertz Corporation .
