Ornö is almost 49 km², 3–4 km wide and around 15 km long, the largest island in the southern Stockholm archipelago and belongs to the municipality of Haninge in Stockholm County .

Ornö is connected to the mainland by a ferry operated by Waxholmsbolaget from Dalarö to Hässelmara - approx. 30 minutes - in the north-west of the island and to other landing stages . About 300 permanent residents live on the island; in summer their number can multiply. There are several larger holiday complexes with stugas (holiday homes).

Every year at the end of May there is a sailing regatta called Ornö Runt with a large number of participants. The regatta course leads u. a. along the neighboring islands of Utö and Fjärdlång .

Ornö was a restricted military area until April 1997 ; foreigners have only had access since then. However, there are still isolated entry and photography bans.

Settlement can be proven as early as the Bronze Age , there are stone setting in the area of ​​Hässelmara . In the Middle Ages there was iron ore mining, feldspar was extracted from 1914–1965 .

The fauna listed moose and reindeer , buzzard , lake and ospreys , and on some lakes throated diver .
