Karl Werner Aspenström (born November 13, 1918 in the Församling Norrbärke, municipality Smedjebacken ; † January 25, 1997 in Stockholm ) was a Swedish poet and essayist.

Life

As the son of a farm laborer, Aspenström graduated from high school and began studying in Stockholm in 1941. In 1945 he completed his studies with a bachelor's degree in philosophy. In 1976 he was awarded an honorary doctorate.

1981 Aspenström received a seat in the Swedish Academy . In 1989 he resigned with Kerstin Ekman and Lars Gyllensten in protest against the academy's refusal to take a position on the death sentence against Salman Rushdie from Ayatollah Khomeini . Since this is not actually provided for in the statutes, he was listed as a passive member until his death in 1997.

Aspenström was particularly known for his high quality metaphors. His amalgamation of poetic, imagery language with banal phrases shows his closeness to the naive and social commitment. The current problems of humans are reflected by animals, myths and sagas.

He was buried in the cemetery of St. Mary Magdalene Church in Stockholm.
