The best day of my life The best days are numbered
(2004)

The best day of my life is the debut album by the German rapper Kool Savas . It was released on November 4, 2002 through the Subword record company , part of Sony Music Entertainment . The best day of my life was released on CD and vinyl . The album was produced entirely by hip-hop musician Melbeatz . Lyrically it can be assigned to the genre battle rap . In addition, Kool Savas also deals with personal topics, which distinguishes the album from previous songs. It rose to number 6 in the German album charts and represented the commercial breakthrough of Kool Savas. With Till 'ab Joe , Optik Anthem and The Best Day of My Life , three songs were released as singles .

background

Savaş Yurderı became known under the stage name Kool Savas within the hip-hop formations Westberlin Masculin and MOR . With these groups and as a solo rapper, he recorded songs that can be assigned to battle rap. For this, Savas often used explicit texts that have been received in the media as pornographic , misogynistic and homophobic . For this reason, Kool Savas became one of the most controversial rappers in Germany and received criticism from media representatives and women's associations, but also members of the hip-hop scene such as Hannes Loh . The EP , released in 2000, Why do you rap? was indexed at the end of March 2001 by the federal inspection agency for media harmful to minors. His single LMS / Schwule Rapper was also withdrawn from the market accordingly. As a harbinger of his first solo album, the EP Haus & Boot was released in mid-2001 through the record company Put Da Needle To Da Records . With this, Kool Savas entered the German album charts . Already on Haus & Boot he was rapping less explicit texts. The record company Sony BMG showed interest in the rapper after Savas' successful chart placement and signed him to their sub-label Subword . He was also given the opportunity to found his own sub-label Optik Records within Sony BMG . At the end of 2002, Savas began building the label's structures together with three employees. Sales remained in the Sony Music Entertainment area of responsibility .

The recordings for the album took place in the Berlin studios Frisbee Music Lounge and 200sqm studio as well as in the LoopLab studio of producer Don Tone in Düsseldorf. In contrast to earlier recordings, the texts of which were created within a few minutes, Savas needed more time composing the songs in order to meet his own requirements for his solo album. The Hidden Track Dunne is an exception, the creation of which, according to the rapper, took ten minutes. In total he worked two to three months on the preparation of the lyrics and the subsequent studio recordings for the album. On November 4, 2002, Kool Savas released his debut album The Best Day of My Life , which, in addition to battle rap, also conveys more personal content and thus contributed to a change in the media perception of Savas.

The idea for the album title came to Kool Savas in Bad Oeynhausen . He was busy in the producer's studio to mix the tape optical elements . Later he drove to the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial together with Curse , Italo Reno and Germany . Busy later reported on a call from Savas: "He then called me, he wouldn't come back to the studio for the time being. He just saw fireflies for the first time , it was the best day of his life. ”In retrospect, Savas stated that the statement was nonsensical, but that it corresponded to his picture from the album, so he opted for the title The best day of my life decided.

content

Texts

Kool Savas' lyrics can be largely assigned to the genre of battle rap . A real or fictional opponent is attacked in a creative way and one's own person is presented in a particularly positive way. This form of verbal argument, which is common in hip-hop music, is known as dissecting . In the case of The Best Day of My Life , names are not mentioned with exceptions. A named opponent is the rapper MC Rene , who had disputes with Kool Savas and Azad over several years, which could be heard on the respective albums of the musicians involved. In the first lines of the intro, Savas takes up the feud with Rene:

"You've waited long enough for an album to come out,
free of requested beats and embarrassing rhymes,
embarrassing lyrics that no one pays attention to and no one understands
with embarrassing lyrics by embarrassing punks like MC Rene."

- Kool Savas : Intro

Apart from themed songs like Keep it Gangsta or The Best Day of My Life , the battle rap genre runs through the entire album. Above all, give up and all in one can be emphasized . The battle rap is expressed in different ways. On the one hand, Kool Savas underlines his superior position over the competition (" I flow better when I cough, rhyme better without tongue and have twice as much air as you on the microphone without lungs. ", All in one ) and on the other hand directs the accusation against opponents of using verbal attacks on their part to cover up a lack of talent ("Since you lack texts, you have to boost your ego and rap because you really believe you are called to do it.", All in one ) . In part, the abuse is directed at the entire hip-hop scene ("Some think that destroying the Twin Towers was bad, but first listen to what most German rapacts sound like", Optik Anthem ).

Another motif of the battle lyrics is the assumption that the addressed opponents are jealous of Kool Savas and would try to imitate the rapper's style ("You think rap is dead. But I notice, you now have perfect control of mine" Flow. ", Optik Anthem ). In addition, the rivals are accused of a commercial stance. They would adapt their music to popular taste and thereby “betray” hip-hop. To reinforce the allegation, a comparison with prostitution is more often chosen (“You want to blow penises into the game!”, Give up ). At the same time, Kool Savas defends himself against the accusation of commercializing his own music, which he was faced with in the course of signing the contract with a successful label, as did his guest guest Azad: (" You think: 'Sellout' and: 'You sold records', Underground music suddenly means rats in the house? I'm sorry, you've got a shadow and I'll laugh at you. Cut yourself off, otherwise it’s right on your cheeks, you Klaus! ", Give up ).

Linguistic images, comparisons and metaphors are typical of the literary genre of poetry in general and the texts of hip-hop music in particular. In the case of Kool Savas' battle rape, for example, a military comparison is used to underline one's own image (" I get up abnormally early, like with the federal government. ", Give up ) or the weakness of the opponent is illustrated with a linguistic image (" I pick crews like carrots and never take off. ").

In Keep it Gangsta , Kool Savas addresses his personal preference for gangsta rap . He names prominent American rappers of West Coast hip-hop in the form of name dropping . He presents the names partly as puns: “I was MC Eiht with eight , Mack 10 with ten , with 40 I am E-40 and still a rap fan. Life is Too Short and I don't feel like chilling out. "

Savas draws a picture that clearly stands out from the rest of the album with the final song The Best Day of My Life . This is a personal piece in which the rapper presents himself as a family man and a vegetarian . He appeals to the good in people and asks the listener to give their life meaning. The rapper attaches a central role to family and close friends. He also explains that he has freed himself from negative influences and renounces fraud and violence against the defenseless:

“You could stop eating animals with
no problem and save a few more lives with no problem.
You should simply spend more time with your parents
and thus simply help to bind your family even more.
Do not think everyone is against you and an obstacle,
be nice and humble, correct and hardworking and you can achieve anything.
Stop doubting, because yesterday is the past and tomorrow is a mystery,
but today might be the best day of your life. "

- Kool Savas : The best day of my life

production

Melbeatz

The production of The Best Day of My Life was completely taken over by Savaş Yurderı's then partner Melanie Wilhelm, called Melbeatz . She recorded the hip-hop beats typical of rap music using an MPC4000 . This is a model from the Music Production Center series by the Japanese electronics company Akai , which can be used to record drum sounds and samples . Kool Savas attributes a central role in his music to the production: “ The beat is the framework, the foundation and the story. Like the script for the film. For me it is [...] important to be challenged again and again. And I am always surprised by Melanie. "

Samples were sometimes used for the background music for Savas' lecture. For example, elements of the song Born, Never Asked by the musician Laurie Anderson were built into the beat structure for Keep it Gangsta . The resulting musical background is stylistically based on G-Funk , a variety of gangsta rap that was particularly popular in the 1990s. A siren is built into the melody of Wie S and runs through the chorus. The idea was brought up by Savas after the piece was recorded and implemented with a megaphone . For the song Gib auf , the phrase “No!” By the comic character Homer Simpson was sampled and integrated from the German dubbed version spoken by Norbert Gastell as a text supplement . Corresponding voice samples from the series The Simpsons were also used for the title Nein , which can be found on the single for Till 'ab Joe .

" Scratches " are built into Transatlantic and Gib auf as a characteristic stylistic device for hip-hop music . This is a DJ technique in which a running record is moved manually, which leads to sound generation. In the case of the affected songs, the then Optik Records member DJ Nicon was responsible for the scratching. Occasionally the programmed musical framework was expanded to include additional instruments. A bass that had been recorded by Marco Franze was used for the piece The best day of my life . He also played guitar for Babaanne Skit . The voice recordings one was in microphone brand Neumann U89i used. After completing the shooting which took place mix of pieces by George "Redbone" Brasch in the Berlin studios Amber . The final audio post-processing, known as mastering , was carried out by Chris Athens in the Sterling Studio in New York City .

Guest Posts

Rapper Eko

A number of guest musicians are featured on Kool Savas' debut album. Eko Fresh and the singer Valezka are involved in two songs each . Kool Savas got to know Eko Fresh when he organized a celebration for his 18th birthday in his hometown Mönchengladbach and booked Savas for it. As part of this event, Eko himself appeared as a rapper, which Kool Savas liked and led him to invite Eko to record in Berlin. Eko was already involved in the recordings for the EP Haus & Boot . The contact to Valezka came through the singer J-Luv , a mutual friend of Savas and Melbeatz. J-Luv was in a relationship with Valezka at the time, so she met Melbeatz and began to record music with her. Kool Savas then used her singing voice for the intro of the MOR album and its release Haus & Boot . Both Eko Fresh and Valezka became part of the Optik Crew and received contracts with Optik Records .

Savas recorded the song Gib on with the rapper Azad from Frankfurt am Main . Kool Savas and Melbeatz first met Azad in 1999. Due to a similar understanding of hip-hop music, the artists stayed in touch what 2000 first collaboration, titled Banana on the album Ming from Roey Marquis II. , Led.

Transatlantic was created in collaboration with the American rapper A-Plus . In the 1990s, Kool Savas and Melbeatz were followers of the Souls of Mischief and Hieroglyphics formations , to which A-Plus belonged. In the late 1990s they both made some trips to Oakland . During a visit they also got to know A-Plus. At the time of the recording process for The Best Day of My Life , the Souls of Mischief were on tour in Germany, so that there was another meeting between Kool Savas and A-Plus and the joint title was then recorded.

For Don't hate , Kool Savas asked the Americans Royce da 5'9 ″ and Tre Little . Melbeatz and Savas liked the single Scary Movie by Royce da 5'9 "and Eminem , which led to the idea to record the piece with him.

Another international collaboration was established with Kurupt, who is known for gangsta rap . Melbeatz later reported that Kurupt had already appeared drunk when they met in the studio: “He was already completely in his own world. He completely ignored me anyway - only when we played him the beat did he appreciate me for a look. Then he looked at Savas and said, 'How did you teach her gangstabeats?' So I was proud that a gang star rapper like him said I had made a gang tabeat ... "

The best day of my life contains two skits in which members of Savas' family communicate over background music in Turkish . On Dede Skit is his grandfather Mustafa Yurderi on Babaanne Skit heard Ferdane Yurderi, the mother of his father. In Turkish, the titles of the skits denote the rapper's relationship with the two speakers.

An additional voice recording came on, As S used. Eko can be heard there as the background voice. The chorus for Till 'ab Joe consists partly of a choir contributed by Valezka, Melbeatz and Savas' brother P. Yurderı.

Singles

When selecting the single , Kool Savas initially wanted to decouple the track All in One . Since people close to him advised against it on the grounds that the song did not stand out from other recordings and Savas himself came to the opinion that all in one are not very different from house & boat , Till 'ab Joe was finally selected . The single was released on October 7, 2002 as CD and record . In addition to Till 'ab Joe , a further title No , a collaboration with Italo Reno, Germany, Eko Fresh and Illmatic, as well as the instrumental versions of both songs can be found on the single. The single was also Savas' first release through BMG Music Canada in Canada . Optik Anthem was released on January 13, 2003 as a second single. The piece was released as a 2-track single together with Germany's 1 , a song recorded together with Eko Fresh. The best day of my life was released as the third single . reception

success

On November 18th, Kool Savas entered the German album charts with his debut album at number 6. For the next four weeks, The Best Day of My Life fell to positions 28, 52, 70 and 78. At the beginning of March 2003 the album could no longer be placed, but at the end of April it entered the album charts again for another five weeks. The album was in the charts for a total of 17 weeks. By spring 2008, around 90,000 copies of The Best Day of My Life had been sold. The album was Kool Savas' commercial breakthrough. The album was also important for Subword , which was founded as a sub-label two years before it was released. With The Best Day of My Life , a record company release entered the charts for the first time.

The first single Till 'ab Joe entered the German charts at number 35 in October 2002. She was able to place herself in the charts for seven weeks . With the second single, Optik Anthem , Savas reached 48th place at the end of January 2003. The song, sung with Eko Fresh and Valezka, stayed in the German charts for six weeks. The third single, The Best Day of My Life , was among the 100 best-selling singles of the week for six weeks after it entered position 45 on April 28, 2003.

Awards

After the album was released, Kool Savas was awarded the Viva Comet music prize in the Hip-Hop National category in August 2003 . The theme song The Best Day of My Life was then also published on the Viva Comet sampler . Previously, Kool Savas had already been nominated for the Echo in the category artist / artist / group HipHop National , although he was inferior to Gentleman . At the Juice Awards , an annual reader vote of the hip-hop magazine Juice , Savas was voted first in the categories Best Rapper National and Best Live Act National, as well as his self-founded platform Optik Records in the category Best Label National .

criticism

The best day of my life was rated primarily by media that deal with hip-hop music. In addition, the album received occasional attention in daily newspapers and magazines. The published reviews were mostly positive.

Musical rating

The German hip-hop magazine Juice awarded the album five out of a possible six “crowns” and named it “Album of the Month”. The best day of my life combines “defensive battle tracks with offensive introspectives .” With this openness, Savas has shown that he has grown up and thus also become more versatile. The editors also found praise for the other musicians involved. Melbeatz productions were described as original and Valezka's soul singing was highlighted. Eko Fresh Savas can also complement well. In summary, Savas' debut album is a "milestone that would change the local rap scene in its foundations".

In his review for the Laut.de e-zine, Stefan Johannesberg calls the album the "best German-language rap debut of all time." The album set new standards in terms of hip-hop beats and raps. In Keep it Gangsta , for example, Kool Savas creates “well-thought-out pictures” and with the title song The Best Day of My Life defeats the “accusation of a lack of lyrical depth.” Savas' manner of presentation is also praised, which, due to its variability, exceeds the contributions of US guest rappers. In addition to the raps, Melbeatz's involvement in the album was particularly highlighted. Her sounds are original and show that she is the best German producer. The musical highlight is the song Keep it Gangsta , whose " heavy, slow G-Funk groove [...] rolls like a bulldozer through the streets of Berlin ".

A review written by Joachim Schaake for Intro magazine was also positive. The production of Melbeatz is emphasized, which appears "timeless as well as visionary". Compared to her earlier beats for Kool Savas and MOR , Schaake notices a leap in quality. The editor notes another further development in Savas' voice insert, part of the so-called flow. The guest rappers are well selected, but could not reach the level of Savas.

The website Allesreal.de paints a slightly different picture. In a review published on the site, the rapper's texts are described as "not original and varied enough". The musician's real strength lies in his inimitable flow and his talent for adapting to different hip-hop beats. In contrast to other reviews, the contributions of the American rappers, apart from Kurupt, are praised. The most noticeable difference to the other ratings is the assessment of Melbeatz's beats. These are "still far from the top German class." This can be seen in the Beat zu Till 'ab Joe . The beat is based on a catchy flute sample, in which Melbeatz should have added more breaks from the editor's point of view . Regarding the beats, it is claimed that they would go largely unnoticed if Kool Savas did not use them. In summary, The best day of my life is a reasonable album, but it will not be able to save German rap.

The news magazine Focus compared Kool Savas with the rapper Eminem and The best day of my life with the debut of the American The Slim Shady LP . Like Eminem in the United States, Savas also has an exceptional position in German-language hip-hop music. His album captivates with “multi-layered arrangements and a flow of rhyme that one has looked for in vain on German hip-hop albums up to now”. Another parallel to Eminem is the attitude of the bullying " underdog ", which is expressed in explicit texts.

Criticism of the image change
Savas' departure from explicit texts met with a negative response in the hip-hop scene and brought him the accusation of complying with the requirements of the major label Sony BMG in order to be more suitable for the masses. This point of criticism was also taken up in the media. For example, Thomas Winkler wrote a review for the daily newspaper in which he primarily deals with Kool Savas' image change. With regard to the rapper's earlier texts such as LMS or Pimplegionär , Winkler notes that the music is “ softening ”. He attributes this to the necessity of commercial success. In order to meet the demands of the "old fans" at the same time, Savas alternates between battle raps and positive messages. The less explicit lyrics find their counterpart in Melbeatz's production, which is “spartan”, “but always warm and almost homely” and thus clearly distinguishes itself from the “beats that are deliberately unclean in the spirit of punk” of the MOR albums. The original consumers will not like the partly used soul singing in some pieces either. In summary, it is questionable whether Kool Savas is still usable for his youthful followers for the "pubertal revolt".

Kool Savas attributed the change in his lyrics to the fact that he had become aware of his own responsibility towards his listeners. The title song The Best Day of My Life is “a track for the kids who […] only knew things from [him] like“ LMS ”or“ Pimp-Legionnaire ”, that is, the tracks that were absolutely explicit, that one as misogynist and which to a certain extent were also misogynist in terms of content. ”With increasing popularity, he had to provide a counterpart to make it clear to the audience that these attitudes did not correspond to his character, but represented an art form.

influence

The best day of my life had a big impact on the German rap scene. The hip-hop magazine Juice listed Savas' debut album as early as 2005 in a special edition about rap in Germany in a selection of important German rap albums: " Mr." All in One "condensed his skills philosophy into just under 40 minutes, everyone played only imaginable rhyme technique, every play on words, every rap-historical cross-references relevant to him and remains more true to himself than the expectations of his fans. “For another special edition about German rap, the Juice editorial team asked a number of rappers, DJs, producers, journalists, bloggers and employees of rap labels about their personal favorite albums. The best day of my life was able to position itself in 5th place within this ranking . At the end of 2010, the magazine's editors looked back on the previous decade with regard to German rap. She also presented what she saw as the 15 best albums, including The Best Day of My Life .

In a survey of hip-hop musicians and rap labels about the best German rap songs in spring 2005, Kool Savas was also able to place himself. The single The Best Day of My Life was ranked 18th.

Other artists were also influenced by the album. The rapper Kaas referred to the importance of Kool Savas and the "classic" The best day of my life . With Strassenrap is sexually aroused thanks to Kool Savas and The best day of my life so far , two tracks from his debut album TAFKAAZ: D also refer to the album Savas'. Olli Banjo emphasized the importance of Kool Savas' album more often. With the conception of his 2010 album Kopfdisco he had the aim to create a classic like The best day of my life . The Berliner Fler also emphasized in interviews Savas' influence on his career as a rapper. According to his own account, he “studied” the best day of my life extensively. The rappers MoTrip and Ahzumjot stated that the album made them aware of German rap. An influence that goes beyond the musical can be seen in the example of soul singer Xavier Naidoo , who repeatedly stated that he was convinced of vegetarianism by the title song of the album.

At the beginning of 2013, the Frankfurt rapper Credibil reinterpreted the theme song The best day of my life . After Kool Savas became aware of the musician and publicly praised him, he also allowed Credibil to use the original melody of his piece. Savas also appears in a video version of the song.
