The verdict is a hip-hop song by the German rapper Kool Savas from 2005 and the core of one of the most important battles in German hip-hop history. Kool Savas responded with this song on Settlement of Eko Fresh . This was followed by further response tracks from Anarchist Academy , Cappuccino and Reen as well as Eko Fresh himself. In November 2011, the hip-hop magazine Juice named The Judgment the second best Kool Savas song of all time.

background

Kool Savas was booked by Eko Fresh in 2000 on the occasion of his 17th birthday in Mönchengladbach for 1,500 DM and, according to Ekos, was impressed by his rapeseed. After Savas initially arranged for him the producer Melbeatz, who was active in his environment, for the recording of Eko Freshs , the debut EP Now we get to the point , released by Royal Bunker in 2001 , Eko signed in 2002 as an artist and backup MC for Savas with his record label Optik Records . After several joint releases, however, Eko Fresh left the label following the release of his EP König von Deutschland in autumn 2003.

A little later, Eko brought out the albums Ich bin jung und haben die Geld and LOVE at BMG , on which the singer Valezka , who was also involved with Optik Records from 2001, was represented in many places. Both albums were able to place themselves in the German album charts , but were sometimes harshly criticized for their pop- heavy sound by the German rap scene, especially Eko's former sponsor Savas.

At the end of 2004, Eko Fresh released the song Die Abrechnung , in which he disasted Kool Savas, among others . Eko assumed that Kool Savas had top dog behavior within the German rap scene and the multiple attempts to systematically keep down artists like himself or Jack Orsen , who together with Savas had once been part of the rap group MOR . In addition, Eko accused Savas, like other artists close to him, of envy and disloyalty. Among other things, he referred to Savas as the second Peter Sreckovic . Savas worked for his label Put Da Needle To Da Records until 2001, before he separated from Sreckovic in a dispute and accused him of fraud and dodgy business methods in the Disstrack Track against Peter, which was released a year later .

After Die Abrechnung had already started disputes between Eko Fresh and the Aggro Berlin artists Fler and B-Tight , in which their former label colleague Bushido was later also involved, Kool Savas responded on February 7, 2005 with the response track The verdict , which was initially offered for free download on the hip-hop website MZEE.com and was downloaded over 100,000 times within a few days.

content

In contrast to Die Abrechnung , which besides Savas also has other rap artists on the subject, The Judgment deals consistently with Kool Sava's relationship with Eko Fresh. In the course of the song, Savas accuses his former pupil of greed and cockiness. The relationship between Eko Fresh and Valezka is particularly highlighted , which, according to Savas, had already been in a secret relationship at the time when they shared optics and had betrayed their business partners Savas and Melbeatz with regard to previously made business agreements. Also possible text plagiarism taken over by the American rapper Killa Cam and a strain on the relationship between Savas and the Berlin rapper Bushido, which came about through Eko's fault, are indicated.

In addition, Savas criticized Eko Fresh's proximity to the German pop music industry, in particular his collaboration with Dieter Bohlen , with whom Eko had written the German number 1 hit Du hast mein Herzbroke for Yvonne Catterfeld as part of his BMG engagement . In this context, he also verbalized the accusation that had been in the room since the publication of LOVE in the German rap scene that his rival was constantly changing his image between Bravo (magazine) rapper, lover, Turkish rap or gangster for marketing reasons . Both Eko's desire for features from German pop stars who were present in the media at the time, such as Jeanette Biedermann , the former Germany is looking for superstar candidate Vanessa Struhler or trooper Da Don, and his most recent return to the Berlin underground label Royal Bunker , where Eko Fresh, according to critics “for the purpose of reconnecting to the scene”, had published the album Dünya Dönüyor - The World Turns in 2004, was critically examined in this context.

As is not uncommon in hip-hop, The Judgment has multiple references to contemporary pop culture and current events at the time of publication. For example, Savas Eko compares himself with the protagonist of the Eminem song Stan and the South Park minor character Mr. Hankey and his eyebrows with the McDonald’s logo, but compares himself with the hip hop mogul Puff Daddy and the professional skateboarder Tony Hawk and die Effectiveness of his rapeseed with the panic triggered by Robert Steinhäuser . Even Jennifer Lopez found in the judgment mention.

The intro of the track was spoken by US rapper 50 Cent .

Music video

A video clip was also produced for the song , which showed Kool Savas driving into a forest with an Eko Fresh double in the trunk and burying it there. The music video was voted first on the TRL charts 20 times by MTV viewers . Kool Savas was the first German artist to win the TRL Golden Tape .

criticism

The verdict was largely received positively by critics.

In their review of the mixtape The John Bello Story , the e-zine laut.de wrote about the verdict:

"A five-and-a-half-minute billing over a familiar, sophisticated Melbeatz background, with which friends of dirty laundry really get their money's worth"

Answers from other artists

Since various German rappers are dissed in Das Verdict , the publication provoked various response tracks. One line of text says, “You're a guy who spreads lies like Hannes Loh ”, which resulted in the short-term reform of the Anarchist Academy. This resulted in the response track The totally crazy crazyboys strike back .

Another line of text from the judgment reads “You are one of them: Nina MC , Reen, Cappuccino, Aleksey , Der Wolf , Eko and Fettes Brot are all dead.” Cappuccino responded to this with the title Appealed . Reen , who had already been involved in a beef with Kool Savas and Eko Fresh at an earlier point in his career, back then as MC Rene, responded with the single The Revelation in 2005 .

A whole series of response tracks followed from the environment of Eko Fresh, such as Die Bestrafung , Die Directschrift and Savas Hunters from 2005 and 50 & Savas (also known as "Savas du Knecht") from 2007. Eko finally ended in 2010 with Der Einspruch , for which he also used the beat of The Judgment .

Aftermath

The conflict between Kool Savas and Eko Fresh brought both increased media attention and is still considered perhaps the most important rap battle in Germany. The verdict is generally seen by many critics as the strongest and most outstanding disstrack in German rap history that has emerged from this beef . The common history of both artists occupied the German hip-hop media even years later. In 2009, a Twitter dispute between the two artists about the blocking of the music video for The Judgment on YouTube was accompanied by media. 2010 declared Kool Savas The decision to no longer want to play in the future live. Eko Fresh soon responded by removing Die Abrechnung from its live repertoire as well. Later, however, Savas revised his decision due to the increased fan demands for the title and the fact that he would no longer connect emotionally with the song.

In 2012, Azad , a long-time musical trailblazer of Kool Savas, sided with Eko on Facebook by declaring that he understood the point of view he had made towards Savas at the time.

In November 2011, Juice magazine compiled a list of the 15 best songs by Kool Savas on the occasion of the upcoming release of his solo album Aura . The verdict came in second behind King of Rap .
