Karl Oettinger
Karl Norbert Julius Oettinger also Öttinger (born March 4, 1906 in Vienna ; † May 8, 1979 in Peschiera del Garda , Verona ) was an Austrian art historian .
From 1924 Oettinger studied archeology, German literature and art history with Adolph Goldschmidt in Berlin and Julius von Schlosser and Karl Maria Swoboda in Vienna. In 1928 he obtained his doctorate with a dissertation on old Bohemian painting in Vienna. phil. In 1930 he entered the Austrian Museum of Applied Art . In addition, he worked from 1934 artist biographies for the artist lexicon "Thieme-Becker" . In 1936 Oettinger completed his habilitation and from 1942 taught as an associate professor at the University of Vienna . After the end of the war, as a member of the NSDAP, his Venia legendi was withdrawn. Oettinger was mainly active as a medievalist and dealt intensively with the early history of Vienna. Methodologically, he was primarily a style critic at first, but later oriented himself more towards the historical foundations of the change in style. From 1954 he taught at the University of Erlangen .
