Deborah Klimburg-Salter

Deborah Elisabeth Klimburg-Salter is an American art historian .

Life

She received her doctorate from Harvard University in 1976 and completed her habilitation in 1989 at the University of Vienna .

She was a fellow at the Institute for Advanced Study , the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin and Magdalen College at Oxford University . She was visiting professor at various institutes: in 2003 at the University of Pennsylvania, in 2007 at the Oriental Institute at the University of Oxford and in 2007 at the École pratique des hautes études . She was the Mary L. Cornille Distinguished Visiting Professor of Humanities at Wellesley College from 2009-2010. Since 1996 she has been professor for non-European art history at the Institute for Art History at the University of Vienna.

Since 2003 she has been a member of the UNESCO International Coordinating Committee for the Cultural Heritage of Afghanistan. As part of the NFN, she also heads a joint program between the Kabul Museum and the University of Vienna and is a member of the executive committee of the Nako Preservation Project. In addition, she is Research Director for the Giuseppe Tucci Photographic Archive and guest curator for the Tucci Tibetan Collections (MNAO).

Her work included extensive fieldwork and writings on the art and archeology of Afghanistan, northern India and Tibet. In 2007 she was awarded the " Austrian of the Year 2007 - Research" prize for her exceptional achievements .
