Bohlmann-Rahtz synthesis

The Bohlmann-Rahtz synthesis is a name reaction in organic chemistry . The reaction is named after its discoverers, the German chemists Ferdinand Bohlmann (1921–1991) and Dieter Rahtz.

A 3-aminocrotonic acid ester (e.g. 1 ) is either a

  • Alkynyl alkyl ketone 2a added or with one

The open-chain compound 3 cyclizes on heating with elimination of water and aromatization to the substituted ester 4 of nicotinic acid .
