Freak Like Me is a 1995 song by singer and rapper Adina Howard .

history

The song was released on January 25, 1995 as the first single from their debut album Do You Wanna Ride? released.

The song became a huge hit, peaking at number 2 in the United States , where it stayed in the charts for months and was awarded platinum by the RIAA shortly after its release . Howard's subsequent works did not achieve the success of Freak Like Me , so critics have dubbed them a one-hit wonder .

The song was written by Eugene Hanes, Marc Valentine, Loren Hill, William "Bootsy" Collins, George Clinton Jr., Gary Lee Cooper, Alita Carter, Kim Spikes and Livio Harris and produced by Mass Order. Adina Howard did not participate in the making of her hit. A cover version by the Sugababes made the title better known in Europe .

Content and music

The song is about different sexual themes, the songwriters were apparently inspired by the content of the title I'd Rather Be with You by Bootsy Collins . The melody of this song is also used in some places . Samples from Sly & the Family Stones Sing a Simple Song are used for the beat . In the song, Howard combines classic hip-hop with soul and R&B influences. She was one of the artists who made the hip-hop soul genre popular in the USA.

With the song and her “hypersexual” image, Howard set a standard in the American hip-hop scene, representing an aggressive female rapper with a strong sexual orientation. She paved the way for other female rappers such as Foxy Brown , Lil 'Kim and Missy Elliott , who are also known for this image.
