Steps is a British dance-pop - band , which had between 1998 and 2002 its greatest successes.

Career

In 1997, manager Tim Byrne placed an ad in The Stage magazine seeking singers for a new band. After the audition, two men and three women were found, Lisa Scott-Lee, Ian "H" Watkins, Claire Richards, Lee Latchford-Evans and Faye Tozer, who then appeared as Steps.

With their debut single 5, 6, 7, 8 they had a first respectable success in their homeland, in Australia they even reached number 1 straight away . The single reached platinum status and also came in at number 2 in New Zealand and Belgium. While the Bananarama - cover Last Thing on My Mind reached number 1 in Belgium , number 5 in Australia and platinum in both countries, the success continued in the UK Home too. The third single, One for Sorrow, was the second number one hit in Belgium and a number two hit in the UK charts.

In the same year, the debut album Step One followed , which brought the first British number one placement with the double single with its own song Heartbeat and the Bee Gees cover Tragedy . The single first rose to number 2 and only climbed to the top after eight weeks. With 30 weeks of charting and a platinum award, it is the band's most successful single release and the best-selling single of 1999 in the UK. The album came to number 2 and was awarded five times platinum.

In the following years, international success waned, while the Steps in Great Britain from 1998 to 2002 were able to string 14 top ten singles, including the second British number one hit Stomp in 2000 . In addition, the second album Steptacular and the first best-of album Gold both reached number 1 and were each awarded four times platinum.

In 2002 the five members announced their separation. Nine years later, the reunification followed, which, in addition to joint appearances, once again produced a best-of album, the Ultimate Collection , which brought them to the top of the charts again. A Christmas album in the following year and a corresponding single were largely unsuccessful, so the band separated again.

In March 2017 the band announced a reunion on the occasion of their 20th anniversary. The new single Scared of the Dark was released on March 10, 2017, the album Tears on the Dancefloor followed in April 2017.
