Richard Hawley
Richard Willis Hawley (born January 17, 1967 in Sheffield ) is a British singer, musician and songwriter .
career
Prior to his solo career, Hawley had played in the band Treebound Story and in the Britpop band Longpigs . He later went on concert tours with Pulp , whose singer Jarvis Cocker is a good friend of Hawley's. It was Cocker who encouraged Hawley to pursue a solo career.
His first album Richard Hawley was released in 2000 as a mini album, a year later as a regular album with additional tracks. With the single Baby, You're My Light from his second album, he entered the UK charts for the first time in 2002 (# 81). His third album, Lowedges , released in 2003, received critical acclaim from music critics and made him known to a wider audience.
The greatest commercial success to date was his fifth album Lady's Bridge , released in 2007 : The single Tonight the Streets Are Ours reached number 40 in the singles charts, the album itself number 6 in the album charts. Tonight the Streets Are Ours was used as the score for the film Exit Through the Gift Shop by British street artist Banksy.
Truelove's Gutter , his sixth album, came out in September 2009. On the album, which, according to Hawley, does not contain any numbers suitable for singles, rare musical instruments such as glass harmonica , waterphone or Cristal Baschet are used.
music
For his mostly slow and melodic songs, Richard Hawley uses instrumentation and sounds that are based on past epochs of pop music. The Süddeutsche Zeitung characterized the music as "sometimes in sparingly rattling rock 'n' roll , sometimes in jazz , sometimes in doo-wop , orchestrated with the subtle force of old English music halls ". The Vienna Standard placed it "between Roy Orbison bombast." , gentle rockabilly rumble and songs from the Lee Hazlewood and Johnny Cash schools ” .
