Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1 is George Michael's second album . It was released in September 1990 and could not quite build on the success of the debut album. It was the last album on Columbia Records with completely new song material up to the album Patience in spring 2004. The disappointing sales figures in the USA led to a lawsuit with Sony Music .

history

After Faith had great international success, George Michael had to repeat it and establish himself as a serious artist - as the album title shows - while making sales at the same time. An MTV rockumentary was recorded during the studio recording . A more dance-oriented album, Listen Without Prejudice Vol.2 , was supposed to follow, but it never came out. Vol. 1 reached number seven in Germany and number two in the USA. In the UK , it was number one on the charts. The album sold eight million copies, which was relatively few compared to Faith's 25 million copies . Praying for Time was released as the first single . At the BRIT Awards , the record won the prize for best British album.

The record cover shows a detail of a photo taken on July 22, 1940 (Coney Island) by the photographer Arthur Fellig .

criticism

On the Allmusic side , the lyrics were criticized as not very successful. The songs Praying for Time , Waiting for That Day and the top ten hit Freedom showed Michael's talent as a pop great.
