Older Songs from the Last Century
(1999)

Older is George Michael's third album . It was released in May 1996 and was the first album in six years. It came about because Michael was fighting a legal battle with his previous label, Sony Music . The album was a great success in Europe and reached number 3 in the charts in Germany, in the USA it received mediocre reviews and did not quite meet expectations with number six in the charts.

history

George Michael worked on Older for three years intermittently . In November 1994, George Michael introduced a new song, Jesus to a Child . The song was a tribute to his Brazilian friend Anselmo Feleppa, who had died in March 1993. It was only after Michael broke up with his old label that the piece was released in January 1996. It was the first single from Older , it achieved great success in the UK and reached number one in the singles charts. The second single, Fastlove, was a faster track. In total, the album sold around 12 million times.

criticism

On the Allmusic side it was criticized that even Fastlove lacked the “carefree spark” of earlier records. Some ballads were among his best pieces. But the melodies are sometimes not convincing enough.
