Danny Barcelona (* 23. July 1929 in Waipahu , Hawaii ; † 1. April 2007 in San Gabriel , California ) was an American jazz - drummer . He was best known for his membership in the all-star band of Louis Armstrong , to which he belonged for almost 15 years.

Live and act

Barcelona had Filipino ancestors and was born in Hawaii; therefore he was later introduced by Louis Armstrong as The Little Filipino Boy . When he was 18 and his senior year of high school, Barcelona was a member of Trummy Young's Hawaii All Stars in the early 1950s . Young recommended him to Louis Armstrong in 1956; Barcelona then became Armstrong's drummer. In the fall of 1957 he moved to New York City and took part in numerous recordings of Armstrong in the following years, such as his hits Hello, Dolly! (1968) or What a Wonderful World and was on his world tours.

It was only after Armstrong's death in July 1971 that he returned to Hawaii and had a long-term engagement at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Hotel and worked in music stores. In 1979 Barcelona moved to North America again and settled in Monterey Park, California .
