Waipahu is a place of Honolulu County on the island of O'ahu in the US -amerikanischen State of Hawaii .

Waipahu is located at 21 ° 23'33 "north latitude and 158 ° 0'39" west longitude. The center of Honolulu is 15 kilometers to the southeast. The bays "West Loch" and "Middle Loch" as well as Pearl Harbor are located directly in the south of the village . The Interstate H-1 highway runs through town .

history

The name Waipahu was formed from the words “wai” and “pahū” of the indigenous people and means “water gushing out”. The cultivation of sugar cane began around 1845 , which required a large number of workers. Low-paid workers were preferred to be hired from Japan , China and, in particular, the Philippines . The sugar factory of the "Oahu Sugar Company" (OSCO), built in 1898, was the main employer. It stopped production in 1995 after almost a century of activity.

Today there are numerous shopping malls and sports venues in Waipahu. The tourism industry is becoming increasingly important and already employs many people.

Demographics

The 2010 census showed a population of 38,216 people with an average age of 35.5 years. Almost 67% of the population are descendants of Asian immigrants, the second largest group consists of 15.6% of the native population of Hawaii and other Polynesians , 12.4% are multiracial, Hispanics 6.8% and whites 3.7% of the population.
