(1995)

Definitely Maybe is the debut album of Britpop - band Oasis , which for the first time on 29. August 1994 at Creation Records was released.

background

production

The recordings for the album cost around £ 85,000. The first recordings were made in Monnow Valley with producer David Batchelor, but were not used for the later release. In an interview in 1995, Noel Gallagher gave the reason for the large age difference and a fundamentally different artistic conception. Gallagher had to choose between Batchelor's "cleverness" and his own "madness" and therefore parted ways with the producer. The Sawmills Studios were completely re-recorded under producer Mark Coyle.

Many of the tracks first appeared on the live demonstration demo that was recorded a year earlier in Liverpool with Chris and Tony Griffiths from The Real People.

All the songs were written by Noel Gallagher .

Notes on individual songs

Live forever

Noel Gallagher wrote the lyrics for this song in response to the negative attitude in many grunge works of the time, especially the lyrics by Kurt Cobain ; According to his own statement, Gallagher had shown incomprehension that the Nirvana frontman had hated himself as a successful rock star, so that he had come to the realization that he love himself and will "live forever".

The video for Live Forever shows how drummer Tony McCarroll is buried alive by the other band members - less than a year later, the band and drummer split up. Some of the UK versions of the promotional video were filmed in the Strawberry Fields Memorial dedicated to John Lennon. The cover of the single shows the house where Lennon spent his childhood (251 Menlove Avenue).

The third single from the album stayed in the UK charts for over a year, peaking at # 10, making it the first Oasis single to hit the UK top 10.

Shakermaker

The name of the song goes back to a toy ( Shaker Maker ) that Noel Gallagher owned in his childhood.

DVD

In September 2004, on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the first publication, a double DVD was released. It contains a one-hour documentary about the recordings of Definitely Maybe , including rare and current interviews with the band and directly involved employees, as well as some live and TV appearances and the promotional videos for Supersonic (UK & US versions), Shakermaker , Live Forever ( UK & US versions), Cigarettes & Alcohol and Rock 'n' Roll Star .

The DVD also includes a version of the CD that contains the track Sad Song , which was originally only found on the vinyl and Japanese versions of the album. New and old versions of the song are slightly different. The voice of Noel Gallagher in the passage

"Throwing it all away
don't throw it all away"

is recorded in two tracks on the DVD. The reasons for this are unclear.

Extensive bonus material rounds off the DVD, including a. Wibbling Rivalry , an excerpt from the infamous Wibbling Rivalry interview.

The DVD received the NME Award in the Best DVD category , beating Nirvanas With The Lights Out , Pixies' Pixies , Scissor Sisters' We Are Scissor Sisters And So Are You and The White Stripes' Live Under Blackpool Lights .

reception

The album was awarded a gold record in the UK just two days after its release . In the same year, the album was certified with the platinum record . Oasis has now received seven platinum awards for Definitely Maybe in the UK , after selling over two million copies there. In 2001 the album was also certified platinum in the United States of America . In the German-speaking area, Definitely Maybe was certified gold in Switzerland in 1997.

The four singles released from Definitely Maybe all entered the UK charts and reached positions within the Top 20. In the United States of America and in German-speaking countries, the singles from Definitely Maybe did not have any chart successes .

Definitely Maybe came 14th in the “Best Album of All Time” category in the Music of the Millennium vote from HMV , Channel 4 , The Guardian and Classic FM . The album also reached # 6 on Channel 4's 100 Greatest Albums in 2005 .
