Dig Out Your Soul is the seventh and final studio album by the Britpop band Oasis . It was released in October 2008.
General information
Oasis released Dig Out Your Soul worldwide on October 3rd, 2008 (in the US on October 7th, 2008). The first single from it, The Shock of the Lightning , was released on September 29, 2008.
The recordings for the album began in the summer of 2007 at Abbey Road Studios in London . Was produced Dig Out Your Soul by Dave Sardy, who already Do not Believe the Truth cared had. The album is the last with Zak Starkey on drums, who was replaced by Chris Sharrock after the recordings. Before the official release, the album was presented as a free stream on the band's Myspace page.
The largest live radio broadcast of a single group of all time planned for the release day of the pre-single, at which a concert at which Oasis presented the new album was broadcast live by eight German and twelve European broadcasters, had to be postponed due to an injury to Noel Gallagher .

As with the studio predecessor Don't Believe the Truth , not all songs are exclusively by Noel Gallagher. Liam Gallagher wrote three songs, Gem Archer and Andy Bell each contributed one song.

Super deluxe box set
A deluxe edition was released as a box set with nine other songs on a second CD, a DVD with the video for The Shock of the Lightning and making-ofs for this video and for the album, a four-fold LP containing the titles of the two CDs , as well as a 24-page book.

Lord Don't Slow Me Down was previously a download-only single, which was released on October 21, 2007 as the title track of the Oasis Rockumentary of the same name and reached # 10 in the UK charts. The piece, which Noel Gallagher described as a mixture of The Who, The Yardbirds and Jeff Beck Group , was recorded as part of the Don't Believe The Truth sessions. Boy with the Blues was originally supposed to be the lead single of an EP planned for 2006, but it was never realized. The Chemical Brothers remix of Falling Down was originally released as part of the download-only single of the original song and also appeared as the B-side of The Shock of the Lightning . I Believe in All was originally given as a bonus track to all iTunes pre-orders of the regular album version.
Artistic description
music
Like its predecessors, the album is heavily influenced by The Beatles and uses elements of classic rock and psychedelic rock , but has a more riff-oriented songwriting than last. The band is attested to have grown musical openness to this album.
According to Noel Gallagher, the band was less interested in songs based on the classical pattern and more in groove :
“I wanted to write music that had a groove; not songs that followed that traditional pattern of verse, chorus and middle eight. I wanted a sound that was more hypnotic; more driving. Songs that would draw you in, in a different way. Songs that you would maybe have to connect to - to feel. "
Texts
Some of the texts are about dealing with one's own beliefs and mortality.
The album title Dig Out Your Soul is a line from Archer's song To Be Where There's Life , which refers to a disc jockey spinning Motown records . Noel Gallagher said of the title: "Dig Out Your Soul is not the best title, but it was the best that we could think of on the day we had to think of it." ( Noel Gallagher ) Originally the title would have been the Record Bag It Up was supposed to be, which was discarded after Noel Gallagher found out from his girlfriend that Geri Halliwell had released a song of the same name. The titles Standing on the Edge of Noise and The Shock of the Lightning (like the single title of the same name) have meanwhile been considered.
Quotes and references
There are numerous allusions to the Beatles: The lyrics of the single The Shock of the Lightning refer to Magical Mystery Tour , Soldier On uses a melody from the song I Am the Walrus , and The Nature of Reality uses guitars that are heavily influenced by the Lean on Song Helter Skelter . (Get Off Your) High Horse Lady uses clapping hands like on Give Peace a Chance by John Lennon's Plastic Ono Band . The song I'm Outta Time contains a hidden snippet of speech by Lennon himself. Waiting for the Rapture quotes the opening riff of song 5 to 1 by The Doors .
The track The Turning , the end of which uses the guitar coda of the Beatles song Dear Prudence , also sounds "suspiciously" like Cliff Richard's Devil Woman, according to the Rolling Stones . The band itself did not take a position on the plagiarism allegations for the time being.
Further parallels were drawn with The Who , Pink Floyd and Gary Glitter . Americana musician Ryan Adams compared Dig Out Your Soul to Radiohead 's Kid A album .
Artwork
The artwork for the album was designed by Julian House. It was originally only intended for art direction, but after Noel Gallagher saw a collage cover that House designed for a book by Hunter S. Thompson , he was hired to design the cover.
The collage on the cover consists of numerous individual images from a license-free picture library. A line from the single The Shock of the Lightning is reproduced in a newspaper headline . Otherwise there are less direct references to the lyrics than to the general themes of the record. House himself describes the cover as a "mixture of mind-expanding vision and folk fair art", which should be "more reminiscent of English psychedelia".

The album sold around 90,000 copies on its first day in the UK alone and immediately hit number one on the British album charts when it was released. Every Oasis studio album thus reached the top of the charts there. In Germany, the band achieved eighth place, the highest new entry in the album charts in the week of entry. In Italy, the album was number one on the album charts.

Falling down
Before the album was released, the song Falling Down was released as a download-only single on iTunes and reached the charts in Italy (# 19), Sweden (# 26) and the Netherlands (# 71). The song is also part of the soundtrack of the anime series " Eden of the East ".
The Shock of the Lightning
The single The Shock of the Lightning was the first lead single from an Oasis album since their debut single, Supersonic , which did not become number one in their homeland. Reasons for this may be in the song that was published long before on the Internet and in the non-presence of the songs typical for Oasis, neither on the album nor previously published, which so far as B-side in the history of the band due to their expected quality (as a reminiscence to the quality of the much-vaunted B-sides of the 1990s singles) repeatedly attracted a great deal of attention from at least the large fan base (who repeatedly pushed the pre-singles of each album to the top chart position in the UK). The video was shot by Julian House and Julian Gibbs, and with the first pictures it picks up on the aesthetics of the cover of the best-of collection Hot Rocks 1964–1971 by The Rolling Stones and otherwise has numerous references to the understanding of art of the late sixties. The song is used in the credits of the Japanese superhero film K-20 - Legend of the Black Mask from 2009 and has also been shown in Honda commercials.
criticism
According to Rolling Stone , the album was “received differently” like its predecessor, but was mostly considered to be “the freshest in a long time”. The album has so far achieved a Metascore of 67 and thus received mostly positive reviews (as of October 15, 2008). According to Billboard , Oasis are rediscovering their original power with the album, which is also due to the fact that Noel Gallagher's songwriting ties in with bygone times. The Observer rated Dig Out Your Soul with 4/5 points and rated the album benevolently as the fulfillment of expectations. the daily newspaper was positively surprised and confirmed that the band had "made another good record". In the online music database omdb, the album received a rating of 9 out of 10 points and was described as a “cracker” that “ties in with the band's glorious early days”. Plattentests.de says that the band "surrendered to itself and its history" and thus found its own musical creativity again.
However, there was also negative criticism: Spin awards 3.5 / 5 points and particularly praises the songs written by Noel Gallagher. However, it is criticized that the pieces from the other band members cannot keep up with the former. The Guardian rated the album as neither a masterpiece nor a disaster and awarded 3/5 points. Uncut also gave 3/5 points and asked if Oasis were still able to get their audience to sing along. Schallgrenzen describes the music of Dig Out Your Soul as "sad mediocrity" and the band as "traditionalists of the purest water". Pitchfork Media assigned the band with a rating of 4.9 / 10 points to have let their formerly more exciting plagiarism of Beatles influences degenerate with influences from punk, glam and shoegazing. The American magazine Paste accused Oasis of causing boredom and awarded 37/100 points.
