Zak Starkey (born September 13, 1965 in London , England ) is a British drummer . He is the son of Ringo Starr , the drummer for the Beatles , and Maureen Tigrett .

Through Keith Moon , the drummer of the British rock band The Who , Zak Starkey came to the drums at the age of ten. At a young age he played in a garage rock - and in a punk band, among other things . He later made a name for himself as a studio musician and worked for Lightning Seeds and Icicle Works , among others .

In 1996, Starkey joined The Who as a drummer and performed live with them for the first time on the Quadrophenia tour. In 2000 he joined Johnny Marr's band The Healers , with whom he released a first album in 2003.

From 2004 to 2008 he played drums in recordings and concerts with the Britpop band Oasis . He was not a permanent member of the group, but worked on the completion of the Oasis album Dig Out Your Soul until a dispute with band leader Noel Gallagher . He played drums on a piece of drums on The Who album Endless Wire , released in October 2006 . He was originally supposed to record the entire album, but was on tour with Oasis at the time of the repeatedly postponed recordings.

His great role models include Keith Moon , Kenney Jones ( Small Faces / The Who ), Bill Legend ( T. Rex ), Rat Scabies ( The Damned ), Paul Cook ( Sex Pistols ), Topper Headon ( The Clash ), Dave Luffy ( The Ruts ) and Al Jackson (Al Green).

Zak Starkey's daughter Tatia Starkey plays under the stage name Veronica Avant Bass in the London band Belakiss .

In 2008, Starkey and his partner Sharna Liguz founded the band Penguinsrising, formerly Pengu! Ns, in which he plays guitar. In 2011, Penguinsrising appeared as the opening act for Beady Eye and Kasabian , among others .
