Do not Believe the Truth (German: Do not believe the truth ) is the sixth studio album by the British band Oasis . It was released at the end of May 2005.

background

If lead guitarist and songwriter Noel Gallagher is to be believed, the title refers to the Iraq war . At a time when everyone was claiming differently and propagating their own truth, he asked himself: "What is the fuckin 'truth?"

success

Do not Believe the Truth reached in the UK , Japan and several other countries 1st place and in Germany No. 2 in the LP - Charts , in the USA it was enough for 12th place, despite the initial success was the album, except for a few countries such as England, Italy and Japan, quickly out of the world charts. By early 2007, it was estimated to have been sold around 3 million times.

Lyla became the seventh single from Oasis, which hit # 1 on the UK singles chart in the week of its release. The Importance of Being Idle earned the same spot on August 28, 2005. The last single on the album, Let There Be Love reached number 2.

The album was followed by a major tour, which by the end of March 2006 attracted 1.7 million viewers, making it the most successful in the band's history.

In 2005 Oasis received the Q Award for Best New Album and the People's Choice Award .

The album

production

The recordings for Don't Believe the Truth were accompanied by problems and unexpectedly dragged on. Originally, the album was supposed to be created in four weeks with producers Richard Fearless and Tim Holmes and released in summer / autumn 2004.

In January 2004, recording began at Sawmills Studios in Cornwall, where Oasis' debut album Definitely Maybe was recorded. Despite the good atmosphere during the recording, the band was highly dissatisfied with the result, "not even good enough to make the b-sides" (Noel). It was decided to take a break to write new songs and revise the existing ones. Noel put it somewhat coarsely: “We were trying to polish a turd.” Of the ten songs written in Cornwall, only four made it onto the album in new versions: Turn Up the Sun , Mucky Fingers , A Bell Will Ring and The Meaning of Soul .

After a brief hiatus, during which a number of new songs were created, including Lyla and Part of the Queue , the band returned to Wheeler End Studios with Noel as producer. They were strengthened by Zak Starkey , the drummer for The Who , who replaced Alan White . The song Let There Be Love originally comes from the sessions on the 2000 album Standing on the Shoulder of Giants , but the lyrics have been completely changed.

In June 2004 Oasis tried two new songs, The Meaning of Soul and A Bell Will Ring ( Gem Archer ) written by Liam , at two concerts in Poole and at the Glastonbury Festival. Both the band's performances and the new pieces received mixed reviews.

After Oasis' manager Marcus Russell reported the problems to the American producer Dave Sardy , he declared his interest in the production of the album. He started post-processing the existing material. In the Olympic Studios in London the recordings were continued for a short time with his help and finally came to an end after another nine weeks in the Capitol Studios in Los Angeles.

style

According to Noel, Don't Believe the Truth is the band 's best album since (What's the Story) Morning Glory? , because each member brought in their own ideas (see web links: Interview at Eins Live ). Liam Gallagher's development in songwriting is particularly influential. The result was a different sound than the Oasis albums, which were usually written almost entirely by Noel. Interestingly, Noel had said the same thing about Heathen Chemistry , which came about in a similar way.

On the album, the rigid division of instruments that has existed since the foundation is broken for the first time. On some tracks you can hear the bassist Andy Bell playing guitar while Gem Archer or Noel take over the bass part. The band's new addition, drummer Zak Starkey, described the recordings: “They are all songwriters. They are all guitar players. They are all producers. And they are all fucking drummers. "

As on other Oasis albums before, influences from bands like the Beatles , The Who , Bob Dylan , the Rolling Stones or the Kinks can be heard.

The song Stop The Clocks was originally supposed to appear between The Meaning of Soul and Part of the Queue on the album; However, the band decided to cancel the piece because none of the recordings made met their own quality standards.

In Japan there are two bonus tracks to be released: Can Y'see It Now? (I Can See It Now !!) and Sittin 'Here in Silence (On My Own) . They occupy tracks 12 and 13 after Let There Be Love .
