Cornershop is a British rock band formed in 1992 . Their music is a mixture of Britpop , Dancefloor and Indian music. It consists of Tjinder Singh (vocals, dholak ), Ben Ayres ( guitar , keyboard , tambura ), Anthony Saffery ( sitar , keyboard), Nick Simms ( drums ) and Peter Bengry ( percussion ). Notoriety she gained particularly by Norman Cook's remix of their song Brimful of Asha (a tribute to the living Bollywood -music legend who Indian singer Asha Bhosle ), which in the original version on their album I Was Born for the 7th Time When is found and in Germany also became known as the theme song for the comedy series Die Dreisten Drei on Sat.1 .

history

The name of the band refers to the shops run by Indian immigrants in England on street corners - the so-called corner shops. Singh and Ayres met in 1989 while studying in Preston . From the initial experimentation with musical instruments and misappropriated household appliances, the idea of a band was born.

She gained greater notoriety after Fatboy Slim successfully released Brimful of Asha as a remix. The song pays homage to the legendary Indian singer Asha Bhosle, who is also known as a musician for Bollywood films. He can be found on the 1997 album When I Was Born for the 7th Time , which sold over half a million copies.

In 1999 the band released the album Disco and the Halfway to Discontent . This was more inspired by disco music and part of their side project "Clinton". Cornershop broke new ground in 2011 with their release Cornershop and the Double-O Groove Of and singer Bubbley Kaur, who was born in New Delhi and grew up in Lancashire . While the song titles are written in English, the lyrics are exclusively in Punjabi . The title Topknot on the album had already been successfully released as a single in 2004.

According to the official website, the band has been working on a film about London's independent scene since 2003 .

In 2020 Cornershop will release England Is A Garden, their first album with new material in eight years. The online radio station ByteFM classified the pre-single St Marie Under Canon as "Glam-Soul".
