The Tide Is High is a 1967 song by the Jamaican band The Paragons , written by John Holt and produced by Duke Reid . As Holt later revealed, the song was originally supposed to be called The Time Is Hard , before the idea of the later chosen title came to him while he was on the beach.
History of origin
The Tide Is High was released in 1968 as the Paragons single on Reid's Treasure Isle and Trojan Records and as the B-side of the single Only a Smile . On the recording, the violin was played by “White Rum” Raymond. It was also released on the album On the Beach with the Paragons (1968).
Once released, the original found little commercial resonance until U-Roy created a DJ version that became popular in Jamaica and the skinhead scene.
