Sonique (singer)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sonique is the stage name of the British singer Sonia Marina Clarke (born June 21, 1968 in Crouch End , London ). Their ancestors come from Trinidad and Tobago .

Life

At the age of 17, Clarke gained her first musical experience as a singer and songwriter in a reggae band. Since she could not make a living with it, she decided to start a solo career after leaving the band. She got a record deal and had smaller club hits under the stage name Sonique. In the early 1990s she met the DJ Mark Moore through working with Tim Simenon from Bomb the Bass and became the lead singer of the very successful S'Express project , with which she entered the charts for the first time . After this project ended, she switched back to the clubs and worked very successfully as a DJ from 1994. She has performed in Europe, Asia, Australia and the USA and also benefited from her singing skills.

At the end of the 1990s Sonique released her own singles again. In the second attempt and via the USA, she had several chart hits in her home country, including It Feels so Good , which became a number one hit in Great Britain and number 2 in Germany , Austria and Switzerland . With Sky and I Put a Spell on You she had two top ten hits and in 2001 she received the BRIT Award for best solo artist. In the following years she had further chart successes, but could not build on the high placements.

In the summer of 2009 she was diagnosed with breast cancer . She defeated this in early 2010 after two operations and five months of chemotherapy .
