Gareth Gates

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gareth Paul Gates (born July 12, 1984 in Bradford , England ) is a British singer who became known for his participation in the first season of Pop Idol , from which he came out in second place.

Life

Gates was born in Bradford, the oldest of four children. With Nicola (* 1985), Charlotte (* 1991) and Jessica (* 1993) he has three sisters. He also grew up with his cousin (* 1986), who was raised by his family. Gates' parents took care of other children several times.

Gates joined the Bradford Cathedral Choir at the age of nine. He was the principal chorister at Bradford Cathedral at the age of 11 and sang ao. a. solo for the Queen when she visited the cathedral in 1997. Gates reached level eight in piano , classical guitar, and singing. He was also accepted into the Royal Northern College of Music prior to attending Pop Idol .

Career

Gates was an early favorite, but he was only runner-up in the first season of Pop Idol in February 2002. Although he didn't win the competition, he was signed to Simon Cowell's record label BMG .

According to Pop Idol

Gates 'first single, a cover version of The Righteous Brothers ' Unchained Melody , made it straight to number one on the UK Singles Chart, kicking off Will Young's (the winner of Pop Idol) first single - the double CD Anything is Possible / Evergreen - from the top of the charts. Unchained Melody was voted Record of the Year 2002 by ITV viewers. His second single Anyone of Us (Stupid Mistake) also sold well and also landed at number one. His third single, The Long and Winding Road , a duet with Will Young, also reached number one on the charts. What My Heart Wants to Say , Gates' fourth single, made it to number five.

Gates was at the height of his career in 2002 when the now defunct Smash Hits magazine declared November 7th to be International Gates Day for its fans.

His debut album What My Heart Wants to Say entered the charts at number two, sold over 100,000 copies in the first week and went double-platinum.

In 2003 Gates sang the Comic Relief charity single Spirit in the Sky with The Kumars . This single also stayed at number 1 on the charts for two weeks. He was also seen at Comic Relief's Celebrity Driving School. Through his participation in Red-Nose-Day (Comic Relief) he got involved in Body and Soul , a charity organization that helps people infected with HIV and AIDS .

His next two singles Sunshine and Say It Isn't So reached number three and four respectively on the UK charts. His second album, Go Your Own Way , entered the UK charts at number 11, but reached number one in some Asian countries, where it went platinum.

Gates had great success outside of the UK, particularly in Asia, South Africa and many European countries. He won an MTV Asia's award for Best International Male in 2003/4 and was recognized by MTV China and MTV Taiwan in the same category.

Say It Isn't So , a 2003 single that hit the charts at number four, is Gates' last single to date to be released in the UK. In early 2004 he made a stadium tour of the UK and then continued his promotion in Europe and Asia. Eventually he decided to take a break and worked as a language trainer and course instructor at the McGuire Program, which also helped him get his language difficulties under control.

Gates had a small role in the S Club 7 film Seeing Double and expanded his work to charity. So he tried to raise awareness of AIDS with the help of a charity concert in front of 50,000 people.

To date, Gates has sold over five million singles in the UK alone, including the second and sixth best-selling single of 2002 ( Unchained Melody , which sold 1.3 million copies, and Anyone of Us (Stupid Mistake) , which sold 570,000 sold) and the second best-selling single of 2003 ( Spirit in the Sky , 550,000 copies).

From 2005

While he was working on his comeback album in 2005, he split from his record label SonyBMG in April 2006. He was in a documentary called Whatever Happened to Gareth Gates? to see who delved into his experiences in and outside of the music industry. The documentary aired on ITV1 in December 2006 and confirmed that Gates has a new record deal. They also presented some new material from Gates. His album was released in June 2007. Some of the tracks were unveiled in a secret appearance on November 29, 2006. For this, Gates worked with writers like Sacha Skarbek ( James Blunt ), Ricky Ross (of Deacon Blue fame) and Pete Gordeno ( Depeche Mode ). The songs were produced by Martin Terefe, Jon Hall and Nick Whitecross.

Since 2004, Gates has worked intensively with singer and songwriter Judie Tzuke , who is best known for her 1979 hit Stay with Me Till Dawn . They met through Lucie Silvas, who worked as a background singer for both Gates and Tzuke. In October 2004, Gates performed as a background singer for the song Bully during Tzuke's tour . The song Dark Days , which Gareth Gates composed with Judie Tzuke, appeared on Tzuke's 2007 album Songs 1 , but not on Gates' album Pictures of the Other Side .

The album's first single was called Changes and was released in the UK on April 9, 2007. It debuted at number 14 on the UK singles chart. Angel on My Shoulder was also released on June 18, 2007 and made it to number 22.

In January 2008, Gates took part in the British figure skating show Dancing on Ice .

Since January 2009 Gareth Gates has been on stage at the Adelphi Theater in London's West End in the role of Joseph in the musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat as the successor to Lee Mead. In an interview he said that he had sung Joseph at the age of eight and that this role was fulfilling a great dream. Andrew Lloyd Webber is said to have asked himself if he would play the lead role.

Private

Gates is a trained speech coach and course instructor on the McGuire program, helping those who stutter similar to how he used to be. He was the youngest Briton to complete the speech coach training for this program. In February 2005 he led a course for the first time and in August 2006 he led a course in Galway on his own responsibility .

Gates has been married to his long-time girlfriend, the dancer, choreographer and model Suzanne Mole since July 18, 2008. On April 6, 2009, they became parents to a daughter.

Gareth Gates lives in London.
