Hopes and Fears (German hopes and fears ) is the debut album of the English band Keane and was published on May 10 of 2004. In Great Britain , the album reached the top of the charts in the first week and was ranked second among the best-selling albums of 2004. In Germany, the album made it to 30th place in the charts.
Background information
While the first track for the album, She Has No Time , was composed in 1999 , most of the others were only recorded between August and November 2001. In 2003 the last two songs were recorded with On a Day Like Today and We Might As Well Be Strangers .
Musically, the album is based on British piano rock / pop. The best known and most successful title is Somewhere Only We Know , which is still used in many multimedia productions today. But the other single releases were also used for many TV shows, especially in Germany. Not a single guitar is used on the entire album, which clearly sets Keane apart from other bands. Tim Rice-Oxley used the Yamaha CP80 as central instruments for the significant piano sound and the Clavia Nord Lead 2X as an analog synthesizer . He often changed the tones with tremolo - and with distortion effects .
The name of the album is derived from a line of text from the song Snowed Under , which was published as the B-side to the single Somewhere Only We Know and which is on the Japanese and the 2009 deluxe version of the album.
Hopes and Fears was particularly successful in Great Britain, where it has gone platinum nine times and won two Brit Awards in 2005 in the categories " Best British Album " and " Best British Breakthrough Act ". The band made it with this album a. a. in addition to Bob Marley , U2 and Amy Winehouse also in a collection of Island Records , which was published for the 50th birthday of the label. After around 5.8 million records had been sold worldwide by the end of 2009, a deluxe edition of the album with additional B-sides and live recordings was released on November 17, 2009 .
Reviews
The album received mostly positive reviews, although many critics also uncovered some negatives. So you missed in drive tests , although "the guitar painful in these purists who rely solely on strumming, drums and occasional gimmicks", but is nevertheless a positive: "You do not forgive Keane only their obvious weaknesses. You even learn to appreciate them. Maybe just as a certain something. ” CDStarts also addresses the lack of guitars and, like many critics, draws a comparison with Travis and Coldplay . About the album itself it says as follows: “The melodies are plain and simple beautiful - in the truest sense of the word. As a songwriter, Keane get straight to the point without entering into any experiments or getting lost in sound effects. Everything looks clear, but not cheap. Melancholy and pathos stand side by side in harmony. In short: pop music in its purest form. A sparkling diamond with an almost perfect cut. "
