First generation Clavia Nord Modular
Clavia Nord Lead 2X

The company Clavia DMI is in Stockholm -based manufacturer of electronic musical instruments , with approximately 30 employees. The product range consists of synthesizers and emulators of classic keyboard instruments used in rock and jazz music.

Company history

Clavia was founded in 1983 by keyboardist Hans Nordelius. First of all, drum computers and e-drums with the name ddrum were produced. The ddrum series was bought and continued by American distributor Armadillo Enterprises in 1998.

Since the publication of the Nord Lead in 1995, the company has focused on the development of keyboard instruments.

Instruments

Musicians who play instruments from Clavia praise the sound quality, the ease of use and the long-term care of the models through updates and the provision of new sounds.

A special feature of the instruments manufactured by Clavia is the "pitch stick", which is responsible for pitch bend in instruments with a keyboard instead of a pitch wheel. Instruments from Clavia stand out because of the strong red color of the instrument housing.

Clavia has been manufacturing synthesizers since 1995 . With the Nord Lead , the first virtual analog synthesizer was brought onto the market. The 4-part Nord Lead could be upgraded to 12 voices with an expansion board and achieved cult status in a very short time .

In 1998 the 16-part Nord Lead 2 followed, which came onto the market with some improvements (distortion effect, improved filter algorithms, etc.). In its expanded form, it was manufactured as Nord Lead 2X for many years.

The 24-voice Nord Lead 3 appeared on the market as a complete revision of its predecessor. In addition to now 3 instead of 2 oscillators and expanded frequency modulation options, the endless rotary actuators with LED rings, on which you can read the exact controller position even in the dark , are particularly noteworthy .

With the Nord Modular, Clavia brought a special instrument onto the market. It consists of a hardware instrument with up to 32 voices and a computer program with which a modular synthesizer can be displayed and connected. The interconnection of the individual modules ( oscillators , filters, step sequencers , vocoders , effects devices , amps, etc.) takes place on the computer ( Microsoft Windows and Mac OS ). This eliminates the typical restrictions compared to purely modular systems, in which every component must be physically present. In the case of the Nord Modular, the only limitation is the computing power provided in the instrument. The hardware has analog inputs so that the components can also be used on external signals, for example when using the instrument as a vocoder or effects device.

Also worth mentioning is the Nord Micro Modular , which was configured with the same software as the larger models, but had less computing power in the device itself. Today it is most likely used as an effects device. In contrast to competing computer solutions ( plug-ins ) in which the PC takes over the sound generation, the modular instruments rely on independent hardware with a correspondingly higher level of reliability in stage operation.

In 2007 the Nord Wave was released, a virtual-analog and sample-based synthesizer.

Clavia also produces the organ simulators C1 and C2 with two manuals . While the C1 only contained the Hammond B3 , Vox Continental and Farfisa Compact Deluxe , a church organ was added to the C2.

The Nord Stage (EX) is designed as a stage piano . In addition to an organ simulation based on C1, it has keyboard instruments such as the Fender Rhodes , the Wurlitzer , the Clavinet and various grand pianos and pianos. A virtual-analog synthesizer section is also available. The instrument is available with 88 (weighted keyboard), 76 and 73 keys and is multi-timbral.

From the 3rd generation, the Nord Electro has the same tonal possibilities as the Nord Stage , with the exception of the synthesizer and multitimbrality . It is available with 73 and 61 unweighted keys (Nord Electro 4D, Nord Electro 4) and a version with 73 weighted keys (Nord Electro 4 HP), currently in the fourth generation. The abbreviation "HP" stands for Hammer-Action Portable . The main differences to the third generation are extended memory (for sounds), "C2D B3 tone wheel simulation" and USB MIDI. The only difference between the Nord Electro and the Nord Electro 2 is the software and any first generation instrument can be upgraded to a Nord Electro 2 .

North Sound Library

The special feature of all current Nord instruments is the ability to exchange sounds / samples in the device memory. The necessary files and transfer software can be downloaded free of charge from the Nord website. The Sound Library is divided into the Piano Library, the Sample Library and the Vox and Farfisa Library. Over 180 sounds are currently available free of charge.
