The Nord Lead is a virtual-analog synthesizer that has been built by the Swedish manufacturer Clavia since 1995 .

history

With the Nord Lead, Clavia released its first virtual analog synthesizer in 1995. The aim of the developers was to emulate the sound of famous sound generators such as the Roland TB-303 and the Minimoog . The 4-part Nord Lead could be upgraded to 12 voices with an expansion board and achieved cult status in a short time.

In 1998 the 16-part Nord Lead 2 appeared with some improvements ( distortion effect , improved filter algorithms, etc.), which is still produced in an expanded form as Nord Lead 2X.

The 24-voice Nord Lead 3 appeared as a complete revision of its predecessor. In addition to now 3 instead of 2 oscillators and expanded frequency modulation options, the endless rotary controls with LED rings are particularly noteworthy.

In June 2013, the fourth generation of the Nord Lead came onto the market. What is new is that, for the first time, internal effects (reverb, delay) have also been incorporated. The rack version was no longer called "Nord Rack" but also "Nord Lead".

Today, many artists use the Nord Lead devices, including The Prodigy , Pet Shop Boys , Kraftwerk , Peter Gabriel , David Bowie , Chairlift , Kaiser Chiefs , The Crystal Method , Jean Michel Jarre , Nicolas Jaar , Billy Idol , Mando Diao and Hiromi Uehara .
