Chairlift (in German: chairlift) was an American electro-pop band.

Band history

Caroline Polachek, who like the other band members from Boulder , Colorado, was the singer in 2005 in a band in which Patrick Wimberly also played. The band broke up and Polachek started working as a backing singer for Aaron Pfenning. The two formed Chairlift as a duo, and when they moved to New York City to study, they happened to meet Wimberly again, who became the third member of the band.

In 2007 her debut single Evident Utensil was released . MGMT released a remix of this, and Chairlift also performed with MGMT. The debut album Does You Inspire You was released the following year. It helped Chairlift to a contract with Columbia Records , which re-released the album and also marketed it in Europe.

Particular attention was paid to the song Bruises contained on it , which comes from the time together of Pfenning and Polachek and which was used for an iPod commercial. The song entered the US download charts and hit the Canadian Billboard charts. The song reached number 50 in the official UK charts. In Germany, the song became a radio hit.

At the end of 2008 Chairlift made a European tour. In the spring of 2009 the group performed at the South-by-Southwest Festival and toured North America as support with other artists. After the private and professional separation of the founding members, they performed as a duo from 2010.

In December 2016, Chairlift announced their dissolution. A farewell tour took place in spring 2017.
