Nerina Pallot
Nerina Pallot [ nəˈɹiːnə ˈpæləʊ ] (born April 26, 1975 in London ; actually Nerina Natasha Georgina Pallot ) is a British singer-songwriter . Years after her debut, she gained popularity with the anti-war song Everybody’s Gone to War and sold over 100,000 copies of her folk-rock- influenced album Fires .
biography
Childhood, youth and education
Nerina Pallot is the daughter of a British-French father and one from Allahabad ( India originating) mother. She is her mother's first child and her father's fourth. She has a sister and grew up on the English Channel Island of Jersey , but also regularly spent time in India until she was 17, and for some time she lived as a child in India. She learned to play the piano at the age of four. When she was 11 she learned to play the guitar on the guitar she bought with her own pocket money.
“One day, a piano arrived in our home and I took up residence at, on, and literally in it. I only ventured out to roller skate to Ravel's Bolero and to buy my first guitar with my pocket money when I was 11. "
“One day a piano arrived at our home and I took up residence, in and in the truest sense of the word. I only left the house to roller-skate to Ravel's Boléro and to buy a guitar with my pocket money at the age of eleven. "
Pallot found inspiration in music in her parents' house, so she imprinted her later singer-songwriter character through albums by Simon & Garfunkel and Carole King . Since there were only a few pieces that matched her young musical taste, she increasingly bought her own LPs , starting with Michael Jackson's Thriller and extending to Bobbie Gentry and Bon Jovi . Jersey became the family's primary residence over time (although they continued to commute between England and India on a regular basis). As a teenager , Pallot moved to London to study violin and opera singing at the English Boarding School . Then she went to the Royal College of Art in London to study art and, in her own words, to free herself from her position as a “music prodigy”, but did not stay long out of dissatisfaction and switched back to the Music College.
“After the pressure cooker of being a musical Wunderkind, I move to London and enroll in art college. Everybody was stoned, which was fun for a while, but I could only listen to The Doors so much and after 5 all night readings of On the Road I was ready to go back to music school. "
“After the pressure cooker of a life as a musical prodigy, I moved to London and enrolled in art school. Everyone was on drugs there, which was fun for a while, but I couldn't listen to The Doors as often as I wanted , and after reading the fifth time on the go in a single night, I was ready to go back to music school. "
There she studied piano and singing and switched from violin to cello , which she said seemed to be more fun. She then wrote her first serious songs on the piano, but decided, due to her musical experience from her youth, to write more songs with the guitar. She was listening to the Beatles' White Album at the time . She then got herself a Hofner bass, which Paul McCartney had already used, and played the bass lines of his song Sexy Sadie by ear.
For a living she worked as a secretary for Andrew King , a manager of the record label Mute Records , who u. a. had worked with artists like Ian Dury and The Clash . Pallot then wanted to turn her hobby into a profession, so she asked her boss to help her build her music career. Given her musical influences from the 60s and 70s, he decided with her to record some modern adaptations as demo recordings. After sending in many demo tapes, the major label Polydor noticed her and signed a contract with her to produce a debut album.
Debut (2001-2002)
Pallot worked on her album Dear Frustrated Superstar with Andrew King, and she always talked to her manager with "Mr. King ”(see also the song Mr King on their second album). However, King cautioned Pallot about their Polydor record label based on his experience of their unattached nature.
“Mr King […] warned me against dabbling with the devil that is the major label, (he even threatened to break someone's legs on my behalf), but I carried on regardless and made a record with a very ridiculous title and some even more questionable photographic evidence. "
"Mr King […] warned me not to get involved with the devil in the guise of the record company (he even threatened to break someone's legs for my sake), but carelessly I went ahead and made a record with a very ridiculous title and left behind more questionable photographic evidence. "
Nerina Pallot released her debut album Dear Frustrated Superstar on August 20, 2001 . It reached a modest 82nd position on the UK album charts, missing the Official Top 75. The singles Patience and Alien were released with the album , but sold with the highest positions of 61st and 98th, which was not in the top 75. Place also below expectations. The songs on the album reflect many experiences from her life, in addition, some of the pieces contain a political focus. All the tracks on the album were written by her. Both under pressure from the record company and because of her limited album production experience, Jason Rebello for Someday Soon and Jeremy Stacey for the pieces Watch Out Billie and Daily Bread helped her to compose.
After a few promotional appearances in various radio stations, often only to record radio jingles due to its low popularity, to the displeasure of Pallot , and appearances in less popular television programs, she appeared on the nationally broadcast British children's morning television show Live And Kicking in 2002 . After she had already sat down and politely made room for the next guests, Faye Tozer , former singer of the casting band Steps , came and pushed Pallot off the couch in front of the camera. A few weeks after her embarrassing show appearance, Pallot published an article on the music industry's own industry message board , where many artists exchange experiences. This described their miserable situation at the time, u. a. also that her record boss did not care enough for the production and financial support of her remix by Photograph . Photographer was as a bonus track for the reissue version of Dear Frustrated Superstar provided the original version of the album was shortly before the shakeout were withdrawn from the market. Furthermore, she described her record boss as “barking mad” (in German: “roaring wildly”). Her contribution got sympathetic approval from other artists in the forum, but due to the brisk tone and her low CD sales she was referred to the report. On the same day Pallot and Polydor went their separate ways. The re-issue version of the album was put on hold, the displeased interpretation by Photograph not published. The song If I Know You , which was already planned as a single , remained unpublished along with the music video that had already been shot. A commitment in the opening act of the Bryan Adams tour that had already been promised by the label management was canceled.
Reorientation (2003-2004)
Pallot then had to revise her plans for the future and withdrew from the music business, she published so-called Stories (" stories ") on her website in which she reflected on the events of her termination in detail, sometimes sarcastically and sometimes sympathetically. Since then, the stories have become a direct line to their fans and reflect the milestones in their careers. She went back to university and studied English to become a teacher and did her intermediate year. In the meantime, she financed her living with various odd jobs, including as a seamstress and babysitter.
“Polydor sponsored several photo shoots for me, and these great clothes by Gucci and other designers always stayed behind. After my contract broke, I must have been the babysitter with the most exclusive wardrobe in the world. I didn't have a cent in my pocket, but great clothes. "
In 2003, she sang the lead vocal in the song Truly on the album Chimera by Delerium . It was released as the second single after the Europe-wide successful song Silence with Sarah McLachlan . It reached number 54 on the UK singles chart and number 1 on the UK club charts and increased Pallot's reputation in the club scene .
In the winter of 2003, while she was still studying at university, she composed her song Idaho . According to her own words, it brought about a turning point in her career, away from her training as an English teacher and towards a new beginning in her music career. She then began to write more songs and to plan a new album.
New beginning of her musical career (2005)
On April 24, 2005 their second album Fires was released . It was released by Chrysalis Music Publishing under their self-founded independent record label Idaho. The publishers of Chrysalis Music Publishing support Pallot, despite her termination at Polydor, and provided her with 50,000 British pounds for this album. Since that sum was insufficient to pay a producer and the studio recordings, she also had to take out a mortgage on her house. With the money now available she was able to continue her work on the album and even live on the rest of the money for her needs. Whenever other musicians temporarily left the recording studios, she smuggled into them and used the time for her own recordings.
She wrote all of the songs on Fires herself and worked closely with her producer Howard Willing, which manifested itself through her relationship with him. Willing has already made a name for himself as a producer of many artists. He has already produced for OK Go , Stevie Nicks , Lisa Marie Presley , Melissa Auf der Maur , Liz Phair , The Smashing Pumpkins and Van Hunt . In addition, the alliance Pallot / Willing worked with the producer Eric Rosse ( Tori Amos , Lisa Marie Presley, Anna Nalick ), so Rosse produced Learning to Breathe and together with Willing Heart Attack . Wendy Melvoin - a member of The Revolution - produced Pallot's song Damascus without any willingness whatsoever . After the essential pieces had been given the finishing touches, Pallot and Willing completed the album and commuted between London and Los Angeles. They received support from Willings and many professional contacts with highly qualified musicians. Similar to her first album, she processed a lot of biographical facts again, so she wrote on the basis of her resignation from Polydor and as thanks to her former manager Andrew King and for his advice, the song Mr King , which he said was mostly ignored .
“And the world is a place, and I pray it's on my side,
But I'd find greater comfort if I just lay down and died.
I don't know what's become of the girl who once knew sunshine.
What's become of the girl who knew sorrow but was strong?
Hey, Mr. King you were right, all along;
Oh Mr. King you were right,
Oh Mr. King, you were right - I was wrong. "
“The world is a place and I pray it is on my side,
But I would find comfort if I just lie down and die.
I don't know what became of the girl who once knew sunshine.
What happened to the girl who knew grief but was strong?
Hey, Mr. King, you've been right all along;
Oh Mr. King, you were right,
Oh Mr. King, you were right - I was wrong. "
Via word of mouth , including via Yahoo! -E-Mail group and many appearances in various concerts in support of well-known artists, especially James Blunt , their fan base grew. Her album was often sold out at the concert stands. Another important point of contact for fans was their MySpace presence. Pallot regularly publishes diary entries there, so-called blogs, in which, in addition to contacting fans, she also shares things from her everyday life. Through this fan contact via MySpace, she was able to sell an additional 11,000 copies of her album. In addition, it is shown in exaggerated video messages, so-called video diaries on their English website, which show, for example, everyday things, tour preparations or making-ofs of their videos.
The album was preceded by the anti-war single Everybody's Gone to War as a download. It takes up the problem of the Iraq war in 2003 and is often referred to as The War Song (" the song about the war ") due to ignorance of the actual title .
“Nerina Pallot”
"And now everyone's
going to war. But we don't know what we're fighting for.
Don't tell me there's an honorable occasion.
No occasion could ever be so honorable."
The follow-up single Damascus followed in June 2005 . Like most of her songs, Damascus symbolizes her life; the song describes her pain after separating from her college friendship and also processes her travel experiences, as she regularly commuted between England and her mother's home country India. She made regular stops in Damascus, Syria . She wrote down this situation in one of her stories , typically Damascus .
“Nerina Pallot”
"It's over.
Everything is unfair, everything is gone.
And I know that everything means nothing
It's over
But I don't wanna fight, I don't wanna be right,
I know it all means nothing.
They fell on the way to Damascus: Well then,
I was also on the way to Damascus. "
In September 2005 the third single with the popular song All Good People was released. In contrast to all previous single releases, no music video was shot for this.
International breakthrough (2006-2007)
Due to her success with her second album, the record label 14th Floor Records (part of the record company Warner Music Group ) approached Pallot in 2005 and offered her a new contract. With the ulterior motive of her expulsion from Polydor, she secured herself this time, so the artists Damien Rice and Joseph Arthur, who are known to her and who are also averse to the strong commercialization of music, were under contract there, which meant that she had more freedom with the new label and did not have to correspond to a pop diva image. With the contract in his pocket, Pallot then published the re-issue version of their album Fires on April 24, 2006 . This version is original Pallot: “ more spangly ” , so more sophisticated than the original version. The songs have been re-recorded and, for example, come with additional strings on some pieces, the artwork has also been completely renewed and the titles All Good People and Learning To Breathe changed places. The album reached number 21 on the UK album charts.
The first single on the revamped album was Everybody's Gone to War . The single was the third most played song on British radio and reached number 14 on the UK Singles Chart. The accompanying music video, unlike all of their previous videos, was broadcast regularly on European music television. On October 2, 2006, the second single Sophia from the re-released album was released, it rose to number 32 in the UK single charts. Sophia was re-recorded with producer Mitchell Froom (known as producer Daniel Powters and his song Bad Day or Elvis Costello , Randy Newman , Crowded House ) in Los Angeles.
“Sophia, Sophia, I'm burning. I'm burning.
It's a fire, a fire I cannot put out.
Sophia, Sophia, I'm learning that some things I can't go without.
I can't go without Him. "
“Sophia, Sophia, I'm on fire. I burn.
It's a fire, a fire that I can't put out
Sophia, Sophia, I am learning that I cannot do without some things.
I can't do without him. "
Following on from their success with the Fires album, their former major label Polydor released the re-issue version of their debut album Dear Frustrated Superstar , which had been on hold for about four years . However, since Pallot no longer worked with Polydor for the reasons mentioned above, it was quickly filled with the B-side tracks The Girl From Lakeville and 57 Flavors , which were already released with the 2001 single Alien . The artwork remained almost unchanged due to the lack of current photos.
On January 8, 2007, Pallot released Learning to Breathe, their fifth single from their album Fires. The music video, released on November 29, 2006, was shot by Lee Lennox, director of the editors ' video All Sparks .
Nerina Pallot received news of the nomination for Best British Female Solo Artist at the 2007 Brit Awards on January 16, 2007 , but the award went to Amy Winehouse .
On February 14, 2007 Pallot married the music producer and composer Andrew "Andy" Chatterly; they then moved into a joint main residence in London.
On April 23, 2007, Pallot's ballad Sophia was nominated for the Ivor Novello Award in the category Best Song (Musical and Lyrical) , the prize ultimately going to Scott Matthews for the song Elusive .
In May 2007, Pallot announced the summer single Peg . Peg is a Richard X- produced cover version of Steely Dan 's song of the same name, Peg, and was announced for July 9, 2007, along with a Richard X remix of Geek Love . The song was finally released on June 25, 2007 as a paid download-only version - without the announced Geek Love remix, but in parallel with remixes by Peg .
The time after Fires (since 2008)
Pallot was already working on her third studio album from the end of 2007, from which she published the demo The Long Tall Grass of Summer on her MySpace page in advance . On February 13, 2009 and August 1, 2009 Pallot released the EPs Buckminster Fuller and Junebug, respectively . Meanwhile, Pallot completed her Bachelor of Arts in English in July 2009. Other songs were played at some concerts, including the works Heidi and Everything's Illuminated . At the concerts on January 26th and 27th, 2008 at the Jersey Opera House, she also played the new songs The Right Side , It Was Me , When Did I Become Such a Bitch? and I Used to Love You Until You Tried to Kill Me . From these and other songs as well as the two EPs Pallot equipped her new album. Owing to the obvious academic Bachelor of Arts degree as well as her desire for musical development to Fires , she called it The Graduate . The Graduate was released in the UK on October 5th, 2009 and peaked at # 46 on the UK charts in its first week of release. The album contains ten songs, the iTunes version contains three additional songs. In addition to the main version, the deluxe version contains seven more songs as an acoustic version in a separate compilation called I Digress . The Graduate's first single is Real Late Starter , but it missed the chart entry. Pallot is currently working with her husband Andy Chatterley on Kylie Minogue's upcoming eleventh studio album. At the end of September 2009 Minogue performed the song Better Than Today, written by Pallot, on their concert tour. The release of the second single I Don't Want To Go Out has been announced for February 15th , until then there will be weekly live sessions over the Internet since January 11th. From December 15, 2011, she was the co-coach of Rea Garvey on the first season of the talent show The Voice of Germany , in which young vocal talents are sought.
style
music
Nerina Pallot developed a characteristic of the singer-songwriter in her childhood through her piano, guitar and singing training. The often heard record collection of her parents, strongly influenced by the late 60s and 70s style, inspired Pallot with Simon and Garfunkel's folk rock and Carole King's singer-songwriter character in these very realms. The self-made records by Michael Jackson Thriller (R&B / Pop), Bobbie Gentry (Country) and Bon Jovi's rock pieces broadened her musical horizon and opened her eyes to modern interpretations. She later continued her musical education in college. She trained her singing and composed her first pieces on the piano. The following summer she consumed the White Album , especially the song Sexy Sadie, and then started playing Höfner bass. So she also integrated the blues and swing elements that occur there into her repertoire. The bass guitar, and especially the concert guitar, then became their preferred instruments for new compositions.
The resulting pieces, in addition to the expected basic components of pop-rock and folk-rock with singer-songwriter influences, often also featured a jazzy tenor (My Last Tango) or often represented a melancholy passion with their clear and sad-looking voice which is reflected in pieces like Dear Frustrated Superstar or Damascus . Really simple pop pieces like Alien or All Good People , based on some equally simple songs by the Beatles or Michael Jacksons, show their tendency to break out of their familiar “style cage”. Pieces such as Idaho and Sophia, or their singer-songwriter-influenced pop-rock pieces such as Patience and Everybody's Gone to War , continued to form their basic timbre. Since her debut album, her folk-rock influences have compared her with Sheryl Crow or Tori Amos , and her often strong melancholy streak suggests associations with Heather Nova . Her jazz and blues sections, which occur in places, are mentally linked to Katie Melua's ballad-like catchy tunes.
Texts
Nerina Pallot's songs almost consistently reflect the experiences and influences she lived out of the suitcase. This starts with their relationships and expansively reproduced separations, extends over a few trivialities to sarcastically captured political, religious and general social worldviews. Some of these aspects can already be found in her debut album, for example in the song Watch Out Billie she warns young women about the side effects of a pop star life. Throws in the song God (to German God ) those same right to have sight of the daily violence, people forget whose heart the "Create" or where in the song Jump regarding their relationship situation macabre comparisons on display.
“I go on and jump, give it a try
Checking the parachute, see if it flies.
Oh if I should break my neck I never bruise…
I go on and just, give it a try
Don't call the ambulance, I'm still alive
And if I should break my neck I'll make the news. ”
"I'll go ahead, try it out
Check the parachute, see if it flies
And if I break my neck I won't hurt myself
I'll go ahead and just try it Don't call
the ambulance, I'm still alive
And should I break my neck, I'll make it on the news. "
In her second album Fires , in the song Everybody's Gone to War , she processes her pacifist attitude towards the Iraq war 2003 “ If love is a drug / I guess we're all sober / If love is a song / I guess it's all over ” . In the love song Geak Love she causes the listener to smile because of her unbound nature “ So hey, you, could you give it a rest? / Just take me home and get me undressed, / Put on a fire and make it enough, / Oh, we're geeks, but we know this is love. ” , Which disappears again into melancholy due to the strong depression that the text of the ballad-like love song Sophia causes shortly afterwards.
Tours and concerts
Pallot has toured many supporting acts for established artists such as Sheryl Crow , James Blunt , Suzanne Vega , Joseph Arthur , Ray LaMontagne and Missy Higgins . She performed at the Guilfest Music Festival in 2005 and also in popular venues such as Bush Hall in Shepherd's Bush (London), London ICA, the Bloomsbury Theater and Regent's Park Open Air Theater .
Her first album Fires concert followed in May 2006 , with which she continued to tour up and down the UK. On September 22nd, Nerina Pallot gave a concert at the SWR3 New Pop Festival 2006, which was recorded for German television. In November she gave a music session for AOL Music similar to the German SWR3 performance. A Europe-wide solo concert was planned for the end of 2006, but due to the overload it was squeezed into two concerts in Oslo and Brussels, at the expense of all performances in Germany. To this end, an extensive tour of the United Kingdom took place in spring 2007.
In October 2009, after a three-year break, Pallot began a concert tour through the United Kingdom, which led to a performance at Òran Mór in Glasgow.
Music videos
Pallot released five music videos with her albums Dear Frustrated Superstar and Fires . Her first video for the single Patience shows Pallot in various scenes, including a piano session. After her time at the Polydor label, she criticized her video for Patience, especially the scenes in which she flies.
"This experience taught me many things, but especially that it is never a good idea to make a video in which you fly."
"This experience taught me a lot, but most of all that it is never a good idea to make a video in which you fly."
In the second video, Alien , Pallot is initially lying on the roof of a car. It turns out that she must have fallen from the sky because of the flattened car “ like an alien ” ( German like an alien ) . Pallot also criticized this video afterwards and described her portrayal in the video as too “ goofy ” , based on the Disney character of the same name. The unpublished video for If I Know You shows multiple nerinas, directed by Julian Temple, competing against each other in a theater. In the video for Damascus , Tim Devine's directional instructions show more reality again, Pallot is filmed playing the piano and singing in the recording studio. The following video for Everybody's Gone to War is by far the most popular due to the international success it has associated with it. It takes place in a supermarket, where customers “shoot” each other with fruit juice, for example, or “bomb” each other with pineapple and white cabbage, creating a small theater of food war. The video for the single Sophia was shot by producer John Hillcoat. Hillcoat has made videos for Nick Cave , Bush , Depeche Mode and Richard Ashcroft . It was filmed in the Moroccan desert, here too she plays the piano and sings again, while a circle of fire burns around her, slowly but surely approaching her and the piano.
Inspired by the song All Sparks by the editor Lee Lennox, she had the music video shot for Learning to Breathe from the album Fires . The video combines the small esoteric puppets known from the All Sparks video with the melancholy text and the story of Learning to Breathe .
The music video of the first single Real Late Starter from The Graduate focuses on Pallot as a late developer. In the infantile Marc Klasfeld video, Pallot plays with (hand) puppets in a children's room, holds an imaginary tea drinking, pop star singing and a fashion show.
