Anna Christine Nalick (born March 30, 1984 in Glendora , California ) is an American singer-songwriter .

biography

Nalick grew up in Glendora, east of Pasadena. Among other things, they brought music to their grandparents, who had worked as singers and dancers on Broadway . She started writing songs in fifth grade. She mentions Fiona Apple , Tori Amos , Blind Melon , John Mayer and Stevie Ray Vaughan as her musical influences . During high school she wrote songs and played in a Rush - cover band . Her original plan was to graduate from college and then start a musical career. But even during her school days, she made demo recordings with a simple cassette recorder . One of them found its way through the parents of a classmate to the producers Christopher Thorn and Brad Smith, two members of the band Blind Melon, which had since disbanded. Nalick signed a record deal with Columbia Records in October 2003 at the age of 19 .

The following year she worked with the two producers and other well-known musicians on her debut album. First the single Breathe (2 AM) was completed. She was featured on the radio in late 2004 and starred in the episode As We Know It of the popular television series Grey's Anatomy . Furthermore, a cover version of the song, sung by Chyler Leigh , was recorded in the episode Song Beneath the Song . After being released as a single in spring 2005, it rose to number 45 on the US singles chart . It stayed in the charts for over half a year and was awarded gold . The song was later also included in the soundtrack to the 2006 movie Griffin & Phoenix (a drama about two cancer patients who find each other). The song became so popular over time that there are now over 5 different karaoke versions (including on Amazon).

Nalick's debut album Wreck of the Day was released in the United States on April 19, 2005, a week after the song. It was just as successful as the single: It reached number 20 on the album charts and also received gold. In addition to Breathe , In the Rough and Wreck of the Day came as album releases in the adult Top 40 radio charts, but not in the official charts.

After that, it took some time before I heard anything from Nalick again. In spring 2008 the EP Shine was released . The theme song was a moderate radio hit. A second album titled Broken Doll was announced for mid-2008, but it did not come out. On October 31, 2008, Nalick married Tim Foster at Autumn Ridge Church in Los Angeles. Tim Foster is a photographer and had among other things shot photos for her debut album. On February 10, 2010 the EP Shine was released in Germany with an acoustic version of the titles "Shine", "Breathe" and "Wreck of the Day".

Later that year it was announced that Anna Nalick had split from her Sony Music label . She released the songs planned for the album, which had been planned two years earlier, the following year as an independent production under the title Broken Doll & Odds & Ends . Despite selling 30,000 copies in a month, the album missed the charts and was largely ignored on the radio. Since then, there have been repeated announcements about a new album that was released in 2017. Nalick is still on the road as a musician and performs across the USA.
