action

The divorced insurance agent Griffin lives in Manhattan . He has two sons who live with his ex-wife. Griffin learns he has cancer and can live for about a year. He attends college psychology lectures on the subject of dying. There he gets to know the pretty Phoenix and persuades her in a very unique way to have dinner together.

Although they get closer and closer in the following, they hardly talk about each other, but simply spend a good time together. One day, after a crazy act by Griffin - he jumped on a moving train just to ride - Phoenix finds books tidying up Griffin's apartment that deal with dying. She insults the perplexed Griffin in a strange way and storms out of the apartment. Griffin runs after her and asks her to explain what happened. In one dramatic scene, Phoenix announces that she has cancer and will die in the near future - she relates the books to herself. Griffin explains to her that the books are meant for him as he also has cancer and will soon die too.

They spend the coming time together and enjoy the togetherness. During a visit to the doctor in the clinic, they witness how a woman mourns for her dying husband and is at the edge of her strength. When Griffin gives Phoenix something, she says that she loves Christmas with the Christmas tree, the gifts - just everything about it.

Another day on the beach, in memory of the woman from the hospital, at Griffin's insistence, they promise each other to leave the other as soon as one is dying or hospitalized. Phoenix hits first - she leaves Griffin a message saying goodbye to him. Griffin goes to the hospital anyway and after a short conversation is sent away by Phoenix. Overwhelmed by his feelings, Griffin smashes his car and a few others and is arrested. His ex-wife's fiancé gets him out of there and they talk very easily.

Shortly thereafter, Griffin goes back to Phoenix and when asked what he was doing there and what happened to the promise, he says he lied. He wants to stay with her as long as he can. She confesses to him that she doesn't want anything else and he lies down next to her. He persuades her to sneak her way out of the hospital and takes her to a forest. He surprises them there with a fully decorated Christmas tree with presents long before Christmas and they celebrate their last Christmas there.

Reviews

David Nusair wrote on Reel Film Reviews that the performances of the leading actors were " extremely effective ", but the film was not drawn in because of the " absurdly sentimental and melodramatic script ". " Quirky " dialogues and the lack of any authenticity would bring the film " essentially to a sitcom level ".

Michael Rechtshaffen wrote in The Hollywood Reporter on September 12, 2006 that the 1976 remake of a television movie starring Peter Falk and Jill Clayburgh would be suitable for female cable television, while the prospects in theaters would not be so good ( " With box office prospects not looking particularly healthy (...), the picture would probably make a better fit on one of the female-targeted cable channels "). The direction is just as " lifeless " as the representations. Blair Brown owes the only scenes with the “ true sharpness ” to the film.
