Mylo Xyloto [ ˈmaɪloʊ ˈzaɪlətoʊ ] is the fifth studio album by the British rock band Coldplay . The worldwide release took place on October 24, 2011.

background

In the Advent season 2010 the Christmas song Christmas Lights was released . Speculations that it would be the first song on the new album were not confirmed. At that time, however, Coldplay was already working on their new album without the public's knowledge. The first songs Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall , Major Minus , Us Against the World , Hurts Like Heaven and Charlie Brown premiered on June 3, 2011 as part of the annual rock festival Rock im Park and were enthusiastically received by the audience.

On August 12, 2011, Coldplay announced on their homepage with the words - “ Hello everybody, We have finished our new album. It's called Mylo Xyloto and it comes out on October 24th. We hope you like it and we hope you are all well ”- the name and the date of publication known. The band itself states that the name had no meaning so far and was chosen because there are no preconceived ideas about it and allegations about intellectual theft in the name could not be repeated.

It was recorded in the "Bakery" studio, located in a backyard building in the London borough of Hampsted. It already served as a recording location for the previous album. Parts of the album were also recorded at the North London studio The Beehive .

Coldplay worked on this album together with British music producer Brian Eno , who already supported U2 . He also influenced the music style of her album Viva la Vida or Death and all his Friends . The concept album deals with the love affair between Mylo and Xyloto and how it persists in the ever accelerating world. The titles give the plot of this story. A special feature are short melodies in front of longer songs, which should put the listener in the mood for the next song.

Cover

A graffito designed by David A. Carter was chosen as the album cover . It is designed from a mixture of cheerful, bright colors, which also reflects the nature of the music to live. So the music seems very happy, lively and hopeful. In addition, on the cover there are difficult to decipher words, parts of the lyrics and terms that are directly related to the album. There is also an alternative cover, which is kept entirely in silver, and two letters are cut out that reveal the graffito.

Single releases

Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall was released on June 3, 2011 before the album was released. It is also available as a record with the album track Major Minus and the song Moving to Mars . The song is based on the I Go to Rio written by Peter Allen and Adrienne Anderson . The single became a worldwide hit.

Paradise (English / German: Paradies) was released on September 12th and is the second single from the album. The single has been sold around 3.0 million times so far.

The third single, Charlie Brown , was released on December 18, 2011.

Princess of China (English / German: Princess of China), the collaboration with Rihanna , was chosen as the fourth single. It has been available for download since April 13, 2012.

From Up with the Birds , were: (top in birds engl./deutsch) UFO as a B-side prepared 2,000 7-inch vinyl records. They were released on April 21, 2012.

Hurts Like Heaven has been available as a download single since July 27, 2012.

Reviews

For Sinem Kiliç from the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, it is the contrasts in tempo and rhythm that characterize the album: “It is these moments in the album that, together with the two interludes, give you time to breathe. In the next moment, however, these pauses for breath lead to songs like “Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall”, which wraps the world in sparkling colors with a driving beat and a catchy guitar riff. ”However, he rates the song Princess of China as“ strange ” :“ In However, this duet is unable to incorporate the otherwise harmoniously formed Coldplay cosmos. ”However, the idea of the concept album is working, Kiliç concludes:“ With this kaleidoscope, the quartet provides proof that concept albums can work [...]. ”

Jens Bauszus from Focus also recognizes a contrasting design of the album, albeit between other points of contrast: He suspects that the band's popularity has increased over time, but long-time fans have turned away from Coldplay disappointed in view of the musical change. Bauszus now recognizes “at least a small balancing act” in the new album, which also includes musical elements from much earlier albums: “On the one hand, they are thick again, focus more than ever on the synthesizer and thus construct even more elaborate sound panoramas like on Viva La Vida . [...] But in addition to the overloaded sound monsters like the pompous single Paradise or Don't Let It Break Your Heart crammed with choral songs , Coldplay also find their way back to earlier great deeds. ” The recourse is particularly evident with the ballads Us Against The World and UFO . Here Coldplay showed “impressively that Coldplay can sound bombastically good even without superfluous bombast, that their songs can radiate beauty because of their inner size. Without an inflated choir. Without wobbling strings. Without any bells and whistles. ”Overall, Bauszus comes to a more skeptical conclusion: For him,“ the feeling remains that Coldplay have fallen short of their possibilities. ”

Erich Renz from laut.de also claims to have recognized a balancing act : “It's not as bombastic as Coldplay's development and the three single harbingers would suggest. Hymns are touched, but do not have a detrimental effect on the insane pop. ”So Coldplay takes a lot back on many pieces:“ It breaks off just before the limit of what is reasonable and at the last second opposes the conventional. The tightrope walk becomes clear with some titles ”. The reviewer particularly emphasizes the guitarist Jonny Buckland, who is "to be credited with the greatest individual achievement": "His riffs in Hurts Like Heaven , Charlie Brown and Major Minus are catchy, lively and provocative."

Andreas Borcholte from Spiegel Online is unable to identify a “lack of grand gestures” in the album. Coldplay still didn't succeed, because "the rest is less a quantum leap than the beautifully composed, universally compatible wide-wall rock that the band had already perfected on Viva La Vida ." Borcholte also refers back to earlier works Coldplays emphasizes: “How good the songs are, how sustainable the melodies, how committed and unsaturated the band stretches for a contemporary rock sound - and despite all the gigantomania, with all wanting too much, they come up with a surprisingly convincing result. "

For Andreas Rauschal from the Wiener Zeitung , the album meant "the final arrival in mainstream pop for format radio listeners , which was both ironed out and overloaded".

Commercial win

Just a few minutes after publication, Mylo Xyloto climbed the top positions of the download portals iTunes and Musicload . Also in the mail-order Amazon was Mylo Xyloto few days before publication of the best-selling album. When Coldplay arrived in Madrid for a concert on October 26th, they were presented with the gold record for 40,000 copies sold in Spain two days after publication .

For the third time the band managed to reach the top position on the Billboard 200 with their album . Like her others , Mylo Xyloto became a number one album in her home country, Great Britain .

In 2012 Coldplay were among the nominees for major music awards. At the 54th Grammy Awards , the band with Paradise was among the nominees for "Best Pop Duo / Group Performance". They were also nominated in the categories "Best Rock Performance" and "Best Rock Song", both for the song Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall . At the BRIT Awards 2012 they won the prize for the best “British Group” and were nominated for the “British Album of the Year”. At the BRIT Awards 2013, Coldplay won the award in the “Best British Live Act” category as a result of their Mylo Xyloto World Tour.
