Savage Garden
Savage Garden was an Australian pop band that featured in the charts between 1997 and 2001 .
history
The band was formed in 1993 when Daniel Jones was holding an audition to find a new singer for his band Red Edge. Jones chose former kindergarten teacher Darren Hayes . Both soon broke away from Red Edge and released their debut album of the same name in the spring of 1997 under the name Savage Garden . The name of the band came from the vampire novels by Anne Rice ("The mind of each man is a savage garden ..." - dt : "The mind of every man is a wild garden ..."), which is one of Darren Hayes' favorite books counting.
Hayes and Jones wrote and produced their own music. They quickly enjoyed commercial success in their home country. With the single Truly Madly Deeply , the band made their international breakthrough. The single reached number 1 on the US Billboard charts in early 1998 and stayed there for two weeks. In total, the album sold 13 million times worldwide, including seven million in America, where the duo already took fourth place on the Billboard Hot 100 with their first single, I Want You .
In 1997, Savage Garden won eleven ARIA Awards and are thus in the Guinness Book of Records , as many of these trophies had no artist before received in one night.
In autumn 1999, Savage Garden's second album, Affirmation, was released. The second single I Knew I Loved You became the band's biggest hit. In the USA, the single topped the charts for four weeks. The album sold over seven million times worldwide.
The following year, Hayes and Jones took part in the Pavarotti and Friends 2000 benefit concert , the proceeds of which went to children in Cambodia and Tibet . On 1 October 2000 Savage Garden occurred during the closing ceremonies of the Olympic Games in Sydney with her song affirmation on.
In October 2001, Savage Garden announced their separation after a world tour. By 2004, the group had sold over 23 million albums and 15 million singles worldwide.
Hayes started a solo career after the split. In spring 2002 his first single, Insatiable , was released, which sold very well in Great Britain and Asia . In the USA, however, he could not build on the success of Savage Garden.
