Failan (Original: 파이란) is a South Korean feature film directed by Song Hae-seong and shot in 2001 in and around Incheon (Korea). This mixture of gangster film and melodrama tells the love story between two people who have never met.

action

Failan, a Chinese woman in her early twenties, comes to South Korea to look for her only living relatives. However, she finds out that they have long since emigrated to Canada. In order to be able to stay in Korea and get a work permit, she pays for an arranged marriage of convenience with a man she never gets to know personally. She finds a job in the country. All she has is a photo of her husband. Nevertheless, she holds on to the dream of being able to meet him one day and even begins to write him letters, but does not have the courage to post them.

The other plot of the film revolves around her husband Lee Kang-jae, a little gangster involved in organized crime. Although a bit older, he is still way down the hierarchy of his gang. When his boss Yong-shik commits a murder, he asks Kang-jae if Kang-jae would take the blame on himself. That would mean a longer prison term. A rejection could also have fatal consequences for him. Then he got the news of the death of his fictitious wife. As a husband, he was notified and he decides to go to the country for her funeral. There he receives the letters from Failan. Reading these letters with warmth and hope leads Kang-jae to question his previous life. He stands up to his boss.

Reviews

Failan got mostly good reviews:

  • … Intolerable dramatic experience worthy of praise. With perfect direction, a masterful script, and two award-worthy performances by Min-shik and Cheung, Failan is a Korean movie that sets a new standard in drama. Failan grabs you for an instance, yet holds you for a lifetime. ”( Mark Flora : Kung Fu Cult Cinema, German:“… praiseworthy unbearable dramatic experience. With perfect direction, a masterful screenplay and two award-winning acting performances by Min-Shik and Cheung, Failan is a Korean film that sets new standards for drama. Failan immediately captures you and holds you for a lifetime. ")
  • Song's bittersweet redemption fable begins in a jagged vein, but slowly settles down along with its protagonist: there's a lovely, sad montage of their respective excursions toward one another. The result brushes with sentimentality, but also finds an unexpected force of feeling. ”( NB : Time Time Out London Issue 1789, German:“ The song's bittersweet redemption fable begins in a mixed mood, but then calms down together with the protagonists: There is a lovable, sad montage of their journey to each other. The result comes with sentimentality, but also finds an unexpected power of feelings. ")
  • The movie is a subtle tour de force of subtlety, and both Cecilia Cheung (Failan) and Min-shik Choi (Kang-jae) are incredible in their roles. By the time the end credits rolled even my own cynical eyes were brimmed with tears. Yes, if you look carefully you'll see that the film is an opera at its core, but it works and that's what counts. "( Jeremy Knox : Film Threat, German:" The film is a fine tour-de-force of subtlety, and both Cecilia Cheung and Min-shik Cho are incredible in their roles. At the end of the film, even my own cynical eyes had tears. Yes If you look closely you can see that the film is essentially an opera, but it works and that's what counts. ")
