Lesley Garrett

Lesley Garrett CBE (born April 10, 1955 in Thorne (South Yorkshire) ) is an English opera singer ( soprano ).

Life

Lesley Garrett grew up in a musical family. She studied at the Royal Academy of Music . From 1984 she worked as a singer with the English National Opera . She took part in the plays Serse , Le nozze di Figaro , Così fan tutte and Die Fledermaus . In 2002 she was awarded the Order of the British Empire for her "services to music". In 2004 she was one of the first dance couples on the show Strictly Come Dancing , where she reached third place together with the ballroom dancer Anton du Beke . In 2005 she toured the UK as The Merry Widow in a Welsh National Opera production . In 2006 she played Mother Abbess in The Sound of Music .
