Multiple Joy (ce) Orchestra
The Multiple Joy (ce) Orchestra , until September 2008 the James Choice Orchestra , is a large-format improvisation ensemble from Cologne that has existed since 2003 .
Band history
The James Choice Orchestra , in whose name the Irish writer James Joyce hides, was founded by Matthias Schubert , Carl Ludwig Hübsch , Frank Gratkowski and Norbert Stein ; a first concert took place on November 29, 2003 in the Loft (Cologne) . Musical models based on the Jazz Composer's Orchestra were the Globe Unity Orchestra (especially his album Hamburg '74 ) and the London Jazz Composers Orchestra around Barry Guy , as well as the tradition of group improvisation in jazz from Duke Ellington to Sun Ra and the innovations of Morton Feldman , Wolff , John Cage , Maurizio Kagel , Iannis Xenakis , György Ligeti , Anthony Braxton and Roscoe Mitchell .
The orchestra meets about five times a year. It gives concerts regularly in the Loft (Cologne) , but has also performed at the Moers Festival , the MusikTriennale Cologne and at Morsbroich Castle since 2005 . The direction was initially shared by the four founders Matthias Schubert, Carl Ludwig Hübsch, Frank Gratkowski and Norbert Stein, who initially also contributed all the compositions that the orchestra performed. After leaving the stone, the remaining founders named the orchestra in Multiple Joy (ce) Orchestra to and accentuated joy ( Joy ) and diversity.
The Multiple Joy [ce] Orchestra incorporates works by composers into its work in loose succession who have already dealt with partially fixed or graphically notated music years ago and who have valued the creative interpreter as an essential authority in the implementation of their works the amalgamation of improvised and predetermined compositional elements. In 2009 the Multiple Joy [ce] Orchestra dedicated itself to compositions of the new improvisational music by Cornelius Cardew ( Treatise ) and in 2010 to Karlheinz Stockhausen's Aus den 7 Tage ; In 2012 compositions by John Cage were also performed. In addition to the compositions of the three directors Matthias Schubert, Carl Ludwig Hübsch and Frank Gratkowski, works by Scott Fields , Simon Rummel , Andreas Wagner and Benjamin Weidekamp have also been interpreted in recent years . In December 2012 the Multiple Joyce Orchestra performed with the Plays Matthias Schubert program .
