Philip Zoubek (* 1978 in Tulln an der Donau ) is an Austrian pianist and composer of new improvisation music and avant-garde jazz . He is also known for his playing on the prepared piano .

Live and act

From 1996 Zoubek studied jazz piano at the Vienna Conservatory . He founded the Ubik quartet and took lessons from Uli Scherer before enrolling at the Vienna University of Music. In 2000 he moved to Cologne , where he studied with Hans Lüdemann , Frank Gratkowski and Marc Ducret . He founded the multimedia project Cauldron , with which he won the composition competition of the Bunker Ulmenwall Bielefeld and the cultural promotion prize of the city of Herford; A Q-Spektrum DVD was created in 2003. He toured Germany and Switzerland with the Snaut group (with Richard Koch , Eric Schaefer and Christian Rainer) and was awarded the 2003 avant-garde competition for young culture at the autumn in Düsseldorf's old town . Since 2004 he has been part of Achim Tang's Trio Torn , which performed successfully in a quartet version at the Moers Festival in 2011 . Philip Zoubek appeared as a composer with his own formation Philz until 2005 . In 2008 he founded the Trio Z3 with Benjamin Weidekamp and Christian Weber . In 2015 Zoubek released his solo album Air . He also plays with Sebastian Gramss Slowfox, Emissatett and the States of play project. Since 2017 he can also be heard with the Philip Zoubek Trio. He worked with Paul Lytton , Frank Gratkowski , Carl Ludwig Hübsch , Ernst Glerum , Herb Robertson , Wilbert de Joode , Christian Thomé , Christian Lillinger , Robert Landfermann and Sebastian Gramss , among others .

Prizes and awards

In 2002, Zoubek won the city ​​of Herford's cultural promotion prize with the Cauldron project and in 2003 took first place in the Bielefeld composition competition for new media ( Bunker Ulmenwall ). In 2008 he received the Horst und Gretl Will grant for jazz / improvised music from the city of Cologne; In 2020 the WDR Jazz Prize in the composition category .
