Pierre-Yves Martel

Pierre-Yves Martel (* 1979 in Ottawa , Ontario ) is a Canadian musician ( double bass , viola da gamba ) and composer whose spectrum ranges from classical music and jazz to experimental and improvisational music .

Live and act

Martel has worked in the Canadian and European jazz and improvisation scene since the 2000s. a. with Philippe Lauzier , Kim Myhr , Martin Tétreault , Carl Ludwig Hübsch , Philip Zoubek and with Kiya and Ziya Tabassian. In 2005 he recorded his debut album Engagement & Confrontation with a prepared double bass . Currently (2015) he works a. a. with Éric Normand , Magda Mayas and the Quartetski formation .

Martel also uses the viola da gamba in his sound research, placing the traditional instrument in new contexts and experimenting with preparations and other objects. Martel also wrote the music for several short films. He lives in Montreal.
