Magda Mayas (* 1979 in Münster ) is a German improvisation musician ( piano ) and composer .

Mayas first studied jazz piano at the Berlin University of the Arts from 1999 to 2001 , followed by an exchange year in the Erasmus program at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam with Misha Mengelberg . She then deepened her studies from 2002 to 2004 at the "Hanns Eisler" University of Music in Berlin with Georg Graewe . Since 2015 she has been doing her doctorate in music performance and interpretation at the University of Gothenburg , where she deals with instrumental techniques, timbre and spatiality in improvised music performance.

Mayas has given concerts in Europe, the USA, Australia, Mexico and Lebanon solo and in collaboration with a variety of musicians and composers such as John Butcher , Andy Moor , Zeena Parkins , Joëlle Léandre , Paul Lovens , Ikue Mori , Phill Niblock , Peter Evans , Andrea Neumann , Burkhard Stangl and Axel Dörner . In doing so, she developed a sound language in which she used both the inner and outer parts of the piano and changed them with the help of preparations and objects. In addition to the piano, Mayas also plays on a clavinet and with metal chimes. She has appeared at festivals and exhibitions such as Maerz Musik (2012, 2015), documenta (2012) and the Berlin Biennale (2014).

Mayas made the documentary Inside Piano for the Australian ABC in 2013 , in which she presented the history of piano playing with advanced techniques and its current practice, including the exploration of historical keyboard instruments; she also conducted interviews with John Tilbury , Anthony Pateras , Reinhold Friedl and Andrea Neumann . In another documentary for ABC Australia, Real Time Music Berlin (2014), she dealt with the approaches and styles of improvised music; The focus was on the Berlin real-time music scene . She also worked on radio essays such as Dream Machine Beirut or Home is Where the Heart Is , some of which were also broadcast on Deutschlandradio Kultur .

Mayas has continued to curate experimental music events and festivals in Berlin since 2005, until about 2009 Keys: Berliner Klaviertage or 2013 with Tony Buck the Compass Festival .
