Matucana comacephala is a species of plant in the genus Matucana from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet comacephala means '(Latin comacephalus) tuft of hair'.
description
Matucana comacephala usually grows individually with spherical to cylindrical, green to gray-green shoots and reaches heights of up to 75 centimeters with diameters of 12 centimeters. There are 22 to 30 tubercular ribs . The bristle-like white to light yellow thorns form an upright tuft at the tip of the shoot. The five to ten central spines are 1 to 4 centimeters long, the 15 to 20 radial spines 1 to 5 centimeters long.
The slightly crooked, pink or occasionally orange-red flowers are 5 to 7 centimeters long and 3 to 4 centimeters in diameter. The length of the egg-shaped, green fruits is up to 2 centimeters. Their diameter is 0.5 centimeters.
Distribution and systematics
Matucana comacephala is widespread in the Peruvian region of Ancash on the eastern slopes of the Cordillera Blanca .
It was first described in 1958 by Friedrich Ritter .
