Matucana is a genus of plants from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The botanical name of the genus refers to the on the western slopes of the Andes - Cordillera located Peruvian city of Matucana , the first plants were found in the vicinity.

description

The species of the genus Matucana , which grow individually or branch out at the base , sometimes form cushions. Their spherical to cylindrical shoots reach heights of growth of up to 50 centimeters. Their few to numerous ribs are low, broad and tuberous. The very variable thorns are fine to piercing. Sometimes they are numerous, mostly there are few or they are missing.

The funnel-shaped to narrowly tubular-funnel-like, bright red to orange or pink or yellow flowers appear near the tip of the shoot and open during the day. They are often zygomorphic ; H. mirror symmetry, but can also be radial symmetry . Your pericarpel and the flower tube are covered with bald or hairy areoles .

The spherical to elongated fruits tear along 1 to 3 slits. They have a persistent flower remnant and contain oval to cap-shaped seeds .

Systematics and distribution

The genus Matucana is only found in Peru .

Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose established the new, then monotypical genus Matucana for the species Echinocactus haynii Otto in Salm-Dyck in 1922 . This is therefore a type of the genus. The genus Matucana includes the following species:

Synonyms are Eomatucana F.Ritter and Submatucana Backeb.
