Matucana haynei is a species of plant in the genus Matucana from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet haynei honors the German botanist and pharmacist Friedrich Gottlob Hayne .

Matucana haynei grows individually or sprouts with spherical to broadly cylindrical, green shoots and reaches heights of up to 30 centimeters with diameters of 20 centimeters. There are 14 to 30 tubercular ribs . The variable white to light brown thorns turn gray with age. The one to 20 central spines are 1 to 7 centimeters long, the 14 to 45 radial spines 0.8 to 4 centimeters long.

The mostly crooked flowers are carmine red to salmon-colored to a little purple-red. They are 4 to 9 centimeters long and up to 4 centimeters in diameter. The spherical to club-shaped, reddish green fruits are 1 to 1.5 centimeters long and reach the same diameter.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Matucana haynei in Peru from the region of La Libertad to the region of Arequipa in the Andes widespread -Westabdachung at altitudes from 1,500 to 4,100 meters.

It was first described as Echinocactus haynii in 1850 by Christoph Friedrich Otto in Joseph zu Salm-Reifferscheidt-Dycks Cacteae in horto Dyckensi cultae anno 1849 . Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose put the species in 1922 in the genus Matucana . Synonyms are Cereus haynii (Otto in Salm-Dack) Croucher (1878), Borzicactus haynei (Otto in Salm-Dack) Kimnach (1960) and Arequipa haynii (Otto in Salm-Dack) Krain (1963).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
