Matucana madisoniorum is a species of plant in the genus Matucana from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet madisoniorum honors the US lawyer Marshall Pierce Madison (1895–1977), his wife Elena Eyre Madison and the Madison Fund in San Francisco for supporting the botanical garden of the University of California .

Matucana madisoniorum usually grows singly and only rarely sprouting with flattened spherical to broadly columnar, cloudy gray-green shoots and reaches heights of up to 15 centimeters with a diameter of 10 centimeters. There are seven to twelve flat and wide ribs that are furrowed across . The up to five blackish brown, curved, flexible and slightly sloping thorns , which can also be missing, turn gray with age. They are up to 3 inches long.

The narrow, funnel-shaped, only slightly crooked, orange-red flowers are 8 to 10 centimeters long and 4 to 5.5 centimeters in diameter. The spherical, hairy fruits reach a diameter of up to 2 centimeters.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Matucana madisoniorum is common in the Peruvian Amazon region northeast of the city of Bagua in the valley of the Río Marañón at altitudes of 400 to 1000 meters.

It was first described as Borzicactus madisoniorum in 1963 by Paul Clifford Hutchison . Gordon Douglas Rowley placed the species in 1973 in the genus Matucana .

Synonyms are Submatucana madisoniorum (Hutchison) Backeb. (1966), Loxanthocereus madisoniorum (Hutchison) Buxb. (1974) and Eomatucana madisoniorum (Hutchison) F. Ritter (1981).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Critically Endangered (CR) ", d. H. listed as critically endangered.
