Matucana polzii is a species of plant in the genus Matucana from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet polzii honors the German cactus and succulent lover Frank Polz.

description

Matucana polzii usually grows with strongly sprouting, flattened, spherical, green shoots that branch out from the base and reach heights of up to 5 centimeters with a diameter of 8 centimeters. The roots are fibrous. There are nine to 16 flat and rounded ribs that are furrowed across. The flexible, white to brownish-yellow to black thorns turn gray with age. The one to three central spines are up to 2.5 centimeters long, the six to twelve radial spines 0.6 to 1.8 centimeters long.

The slightly curved, carmine-red flowers are 5 to 7 centimeters long and 3.5 to 5 centimeters in diameter. The egg-shaped, somewhat purple-brown fruits reach a diameter of 5 to 7 millimeters.

Distribution and systematics

Matucana polzii is common in the Peruvian region of Huánuco on the upper reaches of the Río Marañón at altitudes of 2100 to 2300 meters.

It was first described in 1986 by Lothar Diers , John Donald Donald and Ernst Zecher . A synonym is Matucana aurantiaca subsp. polzii (Diers, Donald & Zecher) Mottram (2002).
