Matucana krahnii is a species of plant in the genus Matucana from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet krahnii honors the German cactus collector Wolfgang Krahn (* 1939).
description
Matucana krahnii usually grows individually and only rarely sprouting with flattened spherical to short cylindrical, gray-green shoots and reaches heights of 10 to 14 centimeters with diameters of 5 to 10 centimeters. There are ten to 18 low and wide, conically tuberous ribs . The mostly curved, flexible, yellowish-brown thorns turn gray with age. The one to four central spines are 2 to 15 centimeters long, the eight to 18 radial spines 1.5 to 5 centimeters long.
The straight to slightly curved, carmine-red flowers are up to 8.5 inches long and 7 inches in diameter. The spherical, green fruits reach a diameter of up to 1 centimeter.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Matucana krahnii is widespread in the Peruvian Amazon region north of Balsas on steep sandstone slopes at altitudes of 1650 to 1750 meters.
It was first described as Borzicactus krahnii in 1979 by John Donald Donald . Rob Bregman placed the species in 1986 in the genus Matucana .
In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Vulnerable (VU) ", d. H. listed as endangered.
