Matucana fruticosa is a species of plant in the genus Matucana from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet fruticosa means '(Latin fruticosus) bushy'.

description

Matucana fruticosa usually grows with narrow, cylindrical, green shoots branching from the base and forms large groups up to 1 meter wide. The shoots reach heights of 10 to 50 centimeters and diameters of 3 to 6 centimeters. There are ten to 21 transversely furrowed ribs . Central spines are not developed. The five to ten straight, needle-like, yellow to brown radial spines turn gray with age. They are 0.8 to 6 inches long.

The flowers are golden yellow at their base and turn carmine red above. They have a slightly crooked to straight mouth. The flowers are 7 to 9 centimeters long and 4 to 5 centimeters in diameter. The spherical, vertically ribbed, initially green and later yellowing fruits have a diameter of 1 to 1.5 centimeters.

Distribution and systematics

Matucana fruticosa is common in the Peruvian region of Cajamarca near San Juan .

The first description was in 1967 by Friedrich Ritter . Synonyms are Borzicactus fruticosus (F.Ritter) Donald (1971) and Matucana aurantiaca subsp. fruticosa (F.Ritter) Mottram (2002).
