Matucana oreodoxa is a species of plant in the genus Matucana from the cactus family(Cactaceae).

description

Matucana oreodoxa usually grows individually with spherical, grass-green to dark-green shoots and reaches a diameter of up to 8 centimeters. A tap root is formed. There are seven to twelve flattened ribs that are divided into round cusps. The straight to slightly curved, flexible, brownish thorns turn gray with age. The one to two central spines are 1.5 to 4 centimeters long, the four to ten radial spines 1 to 3 centimeters long.

The slender, funnel-shaped, radially symmetrical, orange-red flowers are 4 to 6 centimeters long and up to 3 centimeters in diameter. The egg-shaped, light green fruits reach a diameter of up to 8 millimeters.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Matucana oreodoxa is widespread in the Peruvian region of Ancash in the valley of the Río Puchca at altitudes of about 3000 meters.

It was first described as Eomatucana oreodoxa in 1965 by Friedrich Ritter . Rudolf Slaba placed the species in the genus Matucana in 1973 . A synonym is Borzicactus oreodoxus (F.Ritter) Donald (1971).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Vulnerable (VU) ", d. H. listed as endangered.
