Putter Smith (born January 19, 1941 in Los Angeles County , California ; actually Patrick Smith ) is an American jazz musician ( double bass , also tuba and vocals ) and actor.

Life

Smith was best known for his role as Mr. Kidd in the James Bond film Diamond Fever (1971). After that, Smith starred in only three other films. As a bass player he accompanied the pianist Alan Broadbent for many years . He has also worked with Thelonious Monk , Art Blakey , Ray Charles , Bob Brookmeyer , Billy Eckstine , Diane Schuur , Lee Konitz and Jeff Colella ( Lotus Blossom , 2014). He released several albums under his own name, most recently in 2011 at Home . In the field of jazz he was involved in 51 recording sessions between 1973 and 2013, including a. with Sam Most , Larry Koonse , Dick Sudhalter , Mose Allison , Warne Marsh , Bill Perkins , Barbara Lea , Walter Norris , Karrin Allyson and Billy Mintz .

Smith has also published textbooks such as Improvising Handbook for Double Bass and Bass Clef Instruments (Ludwin Music, 2000) and Jazz Bass Improvisation: A Guide to Chords, Scales, Arpeggios & Other Concepts and Techniques for the Advancing Bassist (Musicians Institute Press, 2011) .
