As an adolescent he played in the Flame's house band in St. Paul, where Art Tatum , Billie Holiday and Johnny Hodges performed. He studied journalism at the University of Minnesota (MA 1955) and then did his military service in the Air Force. In 1957 he moved to New York City , where he worked as a radio journalist for WNEW before becoming a pianist at the Duplex in Greenwich Village . Then he became a member of Bud Freeman's quartet and also played with Gene Krupa , Kai Winding , Carmen Leggio and Eddie Condon . In the next few years he accompanied singers such as Carmen McRae , Odetta , Jimmy Rushing and Dick Haymes . He was best known for songs he wrote such as "Peel Me a Grape," which became a hit with Blossom Dearie in 1962 , and "I'm Hip," which he wrote with Bob Dorough . Many other songs were also performed by Rosemary Clooney , Anita O'Day , Diana Krall , Meredith D'Ambrosio , Stacey Kent , John Pizzarelli and Mel Tormé . He also worked with Ben Webster in the 1960s, as well as with Al Cohn and Zoot Sims .

In 1971 he moved to Los Angeles to write songs for the television show The Funny Side and for the film before joining Herb Alpert and Jack Sheldon , starting singing himself and pursuing a solo career from 1977. He put on numerous albums of his own and appears regularly in American and European jazz clubs . He also worked with Rebecca Kilgore . He has lived in Portland (Oregon) with his family since 1986 .

Stylistically he moves on the record You´re A Lucky Guy in swing, which sounds like swinging Dixieland in the ensemble, his sung lyrics are ironic, he has mastered a stridepiano style that is rare today.
