action

Hotel employees Claire and Luke are assigned to last weekend's duty at the Yankee Pedlar Inn, which will then be closed and demolished. The story of Madeline O'Malley, a woman who is said to have hanged herself in the hotel in the 19th century, after she left her fiancé on the wedding day and the corpse was hidden in the cellar by the owners, is entwined around the venerable hotel. Madeline's ghost is said to be still in the hotel looking for her fiancé. Luke is fascinated by the story and, as a hobby ghost hunter, tries to prove the alleged ghost on his website with the help of video and tape recordings.

Since there is only one mother and her child as guests, and Claire was infected by Luke's enthusiasm, she hopes that the ghost will show itself through a few hustle and bustle in her last shift. In the afternoon, former actress Leanne Rease-Jones, who is in town for a convention, checks in. Claire comes out as a big Leanne fan, but Leanne looks anything but likeable to Claire.

When Claire brings out the garbage that evening, Leanne watches her skeptically from the window. Claire then hears strange noises coming from the hotel garage. When she opens the door to the cellar, from which the noises seem to be coming, a pigeon flies towards her, whereupon she locks the door with a chain lock. That same night, Claire goes on a ghost hunt with Luke's tape recorder. She hears and sees how the piano plays by itself. Frightened by the action, she wakes Luke, but he looks disinterested and Claire realizes that she has overreacted. Leanne offers her help, awakened by Claire's screams. Claire tells her what happened. Leanne admits that after her acting career she is now acting as a medium  and that she  sees three characters in the hotel. She also warns Claire not to go into the basement.

The next morning, Madeline's body appears in Claire's bed. Luke calms her down and marks Leanne as a charlatan . The mother and her child leave the hotel and on the same day an elderly man takes a room. He insists on the room on the third floor where he spent his wedding night and wants to feel at home in the hotel again.

After a couple of beers in the evening, Claire suggests Luke go down to the basement to find out what Madeline's ghost is all about. In the basement they hear voices and noises, and when Madeline appears behind Luke, he leaves the hotel in a panic. Before leaving Claire alone, he confesses that he made up the ghost stories on his website. Claire asks Leanne for help. In the basement, Leanne makes contact with the ghost. She starts and orders to leave the hotel immediately. While Claire is packing her things, she remembers that the old man is still at the hotel. In his room she finds a suicide note and sees the man with his wrists slashed dead in the bathtub. She also sees Madeline hanging on a rope from the ceiling.

In the meantime, Luke has come back and Claire tells him what happened. While Luke searches for Leanne so that they can all leave the hotel together, Claire hears noises from the basement. The old man appears behind her on the cellar stairs, whereupon she falls down the stairs in shock. Claire wanders through the cellar and tries to escape into the garage through the previously locked cellar door. When Madeline's ghost appears, she dies of an asthma attack .

The next morning, rescue workers bring Claire's body out of the hotel. Luke explains to the police that he couldn't open the locked cellar door from the outside and that Claire lost her asthma spray on the stairs. Luke speaks to Leanne and accuses her of knowing what would happen to Claire. Leanne replies: "Nobody could have prevented anything."

In the final scene, Claire's room is shown, in which she is shown outlined and the door slams.

reception

The Innkeepers received mostly mixed to positive reviews. At Rotten Tomatoes , 80 percent of the 120 reviews collected are positive, while Metacritic received a Metascore of 64 percent from 26 reviews.

For Filmdienst , The Innkeepers is an “ atmospheric horror film that gently pulls the tension and takes a lot of time”.

Levin Günther from Moviebreak.de judges that "Ti West has once again made a really good horror film", which is "a successful (but not so obvious this time) reminiscence of horror flicks from bygone days".

Rex Reed of the New York Observer , on the other hand, wonders "how a film that describes itself as a horror film can be so boring at the same time". The answer, says Reed, can be found in The Innkeepers . The film offers "harmless entertainment" and "could please viewers who like haunted houses as long as their demands for real thrills are low".
