content

America in the mid 1930s. Widowed watchmaker Wayland Jackson is out in a truck with his daughter Paula. In the wintry forests of North Carolina , his truck breaks down in a river. Looking for help, he comes across a remote farm owned by Collie Wright and her baby Jonathan. Collie offers Wayland and Paula to sleep in an outbuilding. When they look at the truck the next day, they just come across the Campbells, who own the mountainous land across the river, looting the truck and overturning it. Wayland is threatened with guns and has to watch the goings on helplessly.

Collie takes Wayland into the village and asks her father, William Wright, for help. The Wrights commission Wayland to build a bell tower with a clock tower and a rotating bear that strikes the hour. Wayland saves the life of Collie's youngest brother Young Wright while on a bear hunt. At night, Collie receives a visit from Cole Campbell, who is the father of Collie's son Jonathan. The Wrights and Campbells' families are enemies, but both have a secret relationship. Collie, who has fallen in love with Wayland, tells Cole that it is over between them. The drunk Cole becomes violent and fights with Wayland, who has come to the rescue of Collie. Both land in the creek and Wayland pushes Cole under water until he stops moving. Wayland manages to resuscitate the passed out on the bank. Together with Collie they put Cole on his horse and drive it in the streambed towards Campbell's ranch. Some time later, Cole fell from his horse and got one leg caught in the stirrup. Collie's brother Gudger meets Cole and demands that he finally marry Collie and make her an "honorable woman". Cole insults Gudger, whereupon Gudger rides on without helping him. The next morning the horse with the frozen Cole is back in front of Collie's farmhouse.

Investigating Cole, the Campbells conclude that Cole was the victim of a brawl at Collie's house and seek satisfaction from the Wrights. During a consultation with the Wrights, Young suggests that, being the youngest, take the blame on yourself and flee. Eventually, Wayland Jackson explains that it is his fault and that he will be leaving with his daughter the next day. Collie is desperate and goes to see the head of the family, Drury Campbell, early in the morning with her baby. She explains to the unsuspecting Drury that she had a relationship with his son Cole and that Jonathan was his grandson. Collie makes Drury Campbell promise to spare her brothers and Wayland. In return, she gives Jonathan into the care of the Campbells for the life of Drury Campbell. The separation from Jonathan puts Collie to the test and she falls seriously ill. After her recovery, Wayland goes to Drury Campbell and asks him to give Jonathan back to his mother. In an exchange of words, Wayland blames Drury Campbell for the death of his son because Cole had a secret relationship for fear of his father. When Wayland objects that Jonathan will become estranged from his next of kin and will eventually hate those who actually love him, one of Drury's sons raises a gun and wounds Wayland's arm. Wayland withdraws with nothing done.

In spring, the tower clock is put into operation on the occasion of Collies and Wayland's wedding. During the wedding celebrations, Drury Campbell appears with his grandson Jonathan in his arms and hands him over to the overjoyed collie. With an affirmative nod, Drury Campbell Wayland indicates that he was correct in his allegations.

Reviews

"Beautiful, sometimes breathtaking pictures, but a weak script"

- Motion picture guide

"Sultry, over-the-top story"

- Maltin's Movie and Video Guide

“An adventurous melodrama set in beautiful landscapes, which, despite a few touching moments, lacks density and staging skill, so that it ultimately remains constructed and implausible. (TV title: Like a leaf in the wind ")" "
